So, here’s the latest video in the Guyatone series. In this video there is an update of the progress on the LG50 and the body of my replica gets completed. If you follow my work, you’ll know that I very rarely use plastic binding, but of course I needed to on this build. When I’ve used plastic bindings in the past, I’ve found gluing it a real messy challenge, however, now I’ve discovered the “Acetone Method”!
Cheers Gary.

There’s been good progress made with the restoration of the Guyatone. Both the neck and fretboard have been reunited with the body and it’s beginning to look like a guitar again. One thing that struck me about doing this kind of work is, that the more time and care you put in to a restoration the less it looks like you’ve done any work! Cheers Gary

B*gger indeed. You showed remarkable restraint to not verbalise it more strongly, or was that the result of editing? I enjoy the videos. Thanks, Gary. I would like to say I was very Zen-like and accepting but I have to admit to a few choice words off-camera! Cheers Gary

In this instalment, I start the initial stages of the construction of my LG50 replica. However, wood being a natural material, means that sometimes things don’t go to plan……………. Cheers Gary

The Guyatone project is progressing well. In the latest video, you can see how the carbon-fibre reinforcement strips were fitted in to the neck. Also I've got some new tuners and other bits. Cheers Gary Another very interesting video Gary Just to let you know that Steve Howe actually joined the band for their 3rd album titled 'The Yes Album' not the first Yes album but he did indeed play a Guyatone on one of the tracks. Nerdy I know Phil Thanks for that- never really been a Yes fan- sadly lacking in knowledge there! Cheers Gary

So, work on the Guyatone’s restoration begins in earnest, and I think that I’ve opened a can of worms!

Fed-up with all those mandolins? Well, here’s something completely different! For quite a while I’ve fancied doing a restoration project and kept looking on eBay for something suitable. Well, the other week I saw, bid and won this Guyatone LG50 guitar. So, as far as I can tell this wonderful old guitar was made in Japan around about the late 1950s-early 60s. Here’s a video to introduce the project. The brass badge on the tailpiece sold it to me! Note the endearing spelling Cheers Gary

Good stuff, Gary. I'm interested in the mini-lathe for possible model making purposes - does it have a speed control? Keith Hello Keith, Yes, the lathe has speed controller on the power supply. There are many videos on YouTube with guys using these little lathes for various model making bits and bobs. That’s how I stumbled across them. I was thinking of a Proxxon micro wood lathe but could justify the price for the use it’d get. This one was worth a punt! Cheers Gary

The twin-point has gone through the setting-up procedure and below you can see, how she’s looking “in-the-white”. The blue tape that you can see, is there to stop the oil, which new tuners always seem to excrete, being absorbed into the wood. Once I’m happy with the way the mandolin plays (and I am!) it’s stripped back down ready for finishing. After all that careful sanding, some fool has gone and covered it in epoxy! Well, this is probably my last post before Christmas, Amanda and I wanted to thank you for your continued support and friendship throughout this most difficult of years and wish you Happy Christmas and best wishes for the new year! Cheers Gary
