First time at West Kirby Arts Centre last night to see Steve Tilston.
The weather was mostly kind to us - none of the freezing rain that we'd been promised. I mean, it was freezing and it was raining but they didn't combine
Support was provided by our very own lavaman who did a 25 minute set of covers and self-penned material. Playing his Martin (no idea of the model number, I'm sure he 'll answer that if anyone's interested) he got a good sound through the PA after the briefest of sound checks
I was also chuffed to learn that Iain is playing my 'nativity song' at a folk club get-together today. I couldn't be more proud
Then we were treated to 2 x 45 minute sets from Steve Tilston (playing his Brook). He was accompanied by Hugh Bradley on double bass and vocal harmonies. It was everything you'd expect from a Steve Tilston gig. Great songs, great playing and good stories.
He played most of the songs from his retrospective album (released last summer) along with a few classics and even a couple of covers.
There was a licensed bar - which undoubtedly helped things along, though not enough to get too many people joining in with choruses which was a shame (but didn't stop me). ST had to gargle between just about each song as he had a stinker of a cough but he made it through with no apparent lack of vocal prowess.
The venue itself is lovely - a decommissioned Unitarian Chapel - with great acoustics and set up with tables at the front and rows of chairs at the back for late-comers. The loos are also at the front (no real problem) except that they're unisex and only one cubicle had a working lock. Sara and I tag-teamed our visits to minimise potential embarrassment
They've got some good acts booked - including Miranda Sykes - in the new year so, whilst it was my first visit; it probably won't be my last. A great evening all 'round, really
