Do any of you folk have any experience of using one of these, or similar?

I've got something similar but I don't use it very often. Its very heavy when you add the weight of a large condensor mic so you need a VERY strong stand to support it otherwise it will droop. It is useful for reducing room noise (PC fan etc).
For the majority of recordings I use a couple of home made acoustic panels to control unwanted room reflections.

As lavaman. You need a pretty robust stand.

This was the impression I got from reviews. Have you fixed the panels to walls Iain or are they free-standing and portable. I'm just trying to come up with some sort of mobile framework.

I made timber frames 48" x 24" x 4" and infilled them with rockwool. The frames are covered with fabric (that you can blow through) stapled to the timber. I hang them from the picture rail using hooks and string. That way I can move them anywhere along the walls and adjust their height. I've also tried hinging two together so they could stand freely anywhere on the floor. Alternatively, try googling DIY portable vocal booths. Here's one that can be easily dismantled made from duvets clipped to a frame made from plastic drain pipe. www.gearslutz.com/board/bass-traps-acoustic-panels-foam-etc/370969-portable-booth.html

I have an SE Reflection Filter which I bought to try and tame room reverberation. It didn't really help back then and so I used some absorption treatment on the walls and ceilings. I tend to still use the SW RF for vocals when they are being recorded separately. I think the best vocal sound i get is using the SE and the mic in an omni mode. My neighbour has a recording studio in his house and he often borrows it — eh reckons it does make a difference.
However, the most important thing is the basic sound of your room. If this is not good then the filter won't help.
