Watching a TV programme of The Big Yin fending for himself in the Arctic for a week. Staying alive in the sub zero temperatures....avoiding polar bears....making an igloo when he already had a tent AND priming stove.
But....the part of the prog that I found truly amazing......he took a banjo with him and whipped it out at around minus 20c....and played a half decent ( for a man in these conditions) banjo roll.
What a bloke.

What a bloke. I think you’ll find that the banjo was actually the latest technology in polar bear repellents.Tests have shown that bears learn to avoid the area for many weeks after even a brief exposure to its effects. Plus it’s relatively environmentally friendly apart from a minor risk of triggering an avalanche it causes no lasting damage to the environment and is harmless to other species. The only reported downside was that in many cases the operator was banished from the tent by other members of the team making it only really suitable for solo expeditions.

It just goes to show, you have to go a long way to avoid annoying your neighbours with the banjo!

Must admit always preferred him as a banjo player than comedian, great actor though.

My original post was indeed posted in good faith that Billy took with him and managed to play a banjo in the Arctic in subzero conditions. Since this post we have all generally had some laddish/lassish anti banjo banter about that we all have negative connotations regarding 'the banjo'. But maybe his wife Pamela Stephenson can state the Billy/banjo relationship more succinctly. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-46769046

I love Billy. He bought Clive Palmer (ISB, Famous Jug Band, C.O.B. etc) a really nice banjo when he was destitute, and wrote the foreword to his biog.

I watched the 2 part documentary on player now which I enjoyed very much he came across as a decent ordinary bloke who made good and never forgot his beginnings. Talking of banjos has anyone played a six string one are they any good?
Just asking like ............

The tone is banjo-like on a 6 string banjo, but you can’t play it like a banjo. Doesn’t work. Tenor banjo is better. Tuning is analogous to a mandolin. Sounds more banjoish when it’s played, but nothing really sounds like a 5 string.
