I am indebted to Martin Bell for bringing this to my notice on F/B ( it does have it's uses...) -

Although, when he actually gets to the words, he gets ‘em wrong... Of course, it’s possible that was a deliberate swingeing attack on the lack of verisimilitude often present in modern performers of popular persuasion...but I think it more likely he just cocked up

I suspect his brain overheated. That’s the danger of trying to look “cool” in a hat.

I suspect his brain overheated. That’s the danger of trying to look “cool” in a hat. Brian Fascinating concept and amazing bit of playing. However, in my ignorance and apart from my own woolly hat which serves the sole purpose of keeping my old head warm, I'm mystified by hats generally. Not just the concept of a Princess at a royal wedding wearing what appeared to be a toilet seat on her head or ladies at weddings wearing great big hats that could only make sense to other ladies in big hats, but performers wearing hats to perform especially hats tipped at precarious angles or that appear a couple of sizes too small. It seems pretty common practice, so I was wondering what purpose the hat serves and will the right hat make me play any better? I did a blind test where my wife sat and listened to me play the same tune twice, once with my woolly hat on and once with it off, then she had to tell me which one was better. She said they were both crap but couldn't say for sure if one was crappier than the other and that for any future tests, ear muffs would be more useful than a blindfold.

I think I know where you went wrong. You had your wife wearing the hat rather than you! Beginner's mistake

I'm all sorted now, I went off and got a proper musician's hat with ear flaps and when I do them up really tight I can't hear any mistakes at all in my playing, although to be honest I can't hear anything else either, so clearly an improvement. The new hat even has an attachment in case I want to try singing. picture hosting sites

As I often have cause to point out to my wife: how can you trust the judgement of anyone who chose to marry someone like me? Brian
