I'm just wondering what might cause a dead note to appear on a guitar overnight? One has manifested itself suddenly between one week and the next on a guitar I look after belonging to an open mic night I run.
It's the 3rd fret G on the high E string that's muting completely, but the whole high E string seems rattlier than it was. I'm wondering whether to blame humidity (the pub's storeroom is pretty damp) or fret wear (the frets have definitely seen better days) or if the neck might have moved or twisted.
I'm going to start with some new strings and a good clean, but I wondered if anyone has any thoughts on the underlying cause before I start making adjustments?
Just in case it's pertinent: it's a Chinese made Epiphone PR200e dread from the late nineties. Actually one of the best cheap guitars I've ever met.

Given your description, after checking relief, I would look to see if the 3rd fret treble side has lifted at all. If it’s a bound fingerboard - try slipping a scrap of paper under the fret end...
