I know Bela Fleck has been crowned king of the three finger banjo players, and his technique is indeed phenomenal. but I think Tony Trischka has a much better grasp of the dynamics of the banjo and how to make the most of them. This little medley, ranging from a nice mid-range lead on John Henry (it's usual played high) to neat use of Scruggs-Keith tuners shows what I mean, I think.
Edit: The music doesn't start until about two minutes in.

I played this this morning before I left for the day and the second tune was still going through my mind about 20 minutes down the road. To me, very good musicians have a way of playing that 'hits the nail on the head' - I suppose it must be tone, tuning, timing (as I was writing that I vaguely remember a Tony Rice quote that says that something similar so that's probably where that comes from.) Wish I could do it.
John Henry was class as well I thought.
thanks Pete Martin
