Love this album. I remember seeing James do 'Fire and Rain' on TOTP

Thanks for that Phil - agree entirely - it is a superb recording, and I still treasure my LP. There's a lot of guitar lessons in that vinyl!
There's also a lot of great memories in those songs. A few less good ones too, but they don't bother me none now!
I remember being enthralled by this BBC TV programme - and copying his version of Help from my Friends therefrom -

Thanks, they've convinced me I need to add the album to my collection, just fantastic and I love his tone with the old J50 playing those songs.

And I agree, that 1970s miked J50 sound is just right for his music - I prefer it to the more recent piezo Olson sound. Keith

Wonderful album. Of course, as his popularity grew and venues got bigger the amplification had to change :-)

I bought a JT album on the recommendation Ralph McTell gave in a Guitar (I think) magazine interview (the one in which he said he wished he'd had shares in Hartley's Jelly after he previous interview!) I am grateful to McTell for many things - but this was top of the list

I may be a bit out of step here, but yes I like the Sweet Baby James album, but it's a bit curate's egg to me. There are sublime tracks, Sweet Baby James of course (though Leo's Halifax offering was more memorable, though I had consumed a fair bit of alcohol by then). There are a few other great tracks, but also a few forgettable ones that seem to me to be just filling the space.
I did like him enormously in the film two lane blacktop, with his 55 Chevy custom.

James always sounded the best with his old Gibson IMHO. There's a somewhat strange clip on Youtube where he revisits his old guitar and talks about guitars being worn out..must be a blow to the vintage guitar market..

A trip down to Denmark St will let you see a range of old guitars, completely f#^^%dd and coatings fortune!

I first saw JT in 1971 at Newcastle City Hall with Carole King on the Mud Slide Slim tour. Famously that was a concert that Sting also attended and knew that night what he wanted to do with his life.
James sounds great playing just about any guitar but I’d take issue with a suggestion that his Olsons are inferior to his Gibson.

Certainly agree re James's playing, but having reread the thread I can't find anything that might suggest that his Olsons are inferior to his Gibson..... There are some personal preferences expressed re the sound produced in live situations, largely related to amplification methods. Keith

It is interesting how different guitar brands seem to resonate with certain types of players. Olson has a certain sound that sounds lovely on gentle picking. I was watching a video of Justin Heywood yesterday and saw he was playing an Olson as well. In tone they remind me of — although are different to — Fylde's!
