Last night was my second open-mic night at a local pub. I'm a beginner and there were three other guitarists with me so it wasn't as scary as just being up there on my own! We stuck to simple songs like: David Bowie's Sorrow and Hey Joe.
One thing that I noticed though was that I really struggled to hear my guitar (an acoustic Applause roundback). I could hear the singer's acoustic guitar and he was front and left of me. My guitar was not plugged in but as there were no monitor speakers I doubt that would have made much difference anyway. I think next time I'll try playing with a plectrum. I think that might add some volume to my playing.
Anyway, I really enjoyed it and I think I've been bitten by the bug of playing Live!

My old band played a very rare gig last week. I couldn’t hear my guitar at all so I just stopped playing and just sang instead. If you aren’t plugged in it can be heard to hear yourself.

Are there no "folk" or Acoustic music" clubs/meetings near you?
Wouldn't they be a better venue than an all plugged in "open mic"?
Just a thought.

Even when you are plugged in it can be hard to hear your own guitar! But then I'm used to having a fiddle player 2 feet from my right ear - fiddles can be very loud!

Thanks guys. Glad it seems to be a common problem. curmudgeon I haven't looked for folk or pure acoustic clubs or meetings - that's a good idea. Thanks.

I went to my second open mic today, so I feel your sentiment. There were 25 (ish) players, so quite a reasonable audience, well it was to me, who has never played to anyone else before (apart from the wife). Quite terrifying to be honest, but I managed to get through two songs without too many obvious mistakes. If anyone is within travelling distance, there is an open mic every 2nd Saturday of the month from 12:30 to 2:30pm at the Library in Nettleham just outside Lincoln. Also another on the 3rd Saturday of every month at the central library in Lincoln itself, 12:00 midday to 2:00pm .... Lots of variety from guitars, uke's, harmonica's, irish pipes, and more.

Well done Cougar and Nik, it's great that you're getting out there and playing. It opens a whole new world especially in the meeting of other musicians, jamming, new projects etc.

(Instead of being absolutely petrified, obviously).......
