I recently sold a mandolin and bought a different one. The new one takes ball end strings while the old one used loop end. Of course I now have three sets of unused loop end strings, and I'm just wondering if anyone might be in the opposite situation and like to swap.

It’s a fiddle but, when you change the strings you can cut out the ball ends from the old ones and put them in your loop end strings; you may just need to close the loop a little with some needle nose pliers. Alternatively some tailpieces will take both if the ball is held by a peg. Out of interest what mandolin did you get?

Recycling your balls is always a good idea if you can. I have resorted to this on several occasions, and also, more painfully, crushing ethe balls to convert to loops. Works well.

Thank you, I'll give that a try. My new mandolin was made in Kerry by Siveen mandolins, it has a 35mm nut width and wider than usual string spacing. It is made from walnut and torrified spruce.

The same, I'll be 70 this year, but the doctor keeps telling me "I'm in great shape for my age". Let's hope he's right, after a very difficult marriage and bringing up children on my own, I'm just starting to live again.

Having a much younger girlfriend helps enormously.
