I saw on the recent Brook newsletter a lovely looking fretless baritone which coincided with me hearing the Turkish Guitar player Cenk Erdogan. ^Image from Brook Newletter
Has anyone played a fretless guitar? What was it like... Are they something to really play or just a bit of novelty that you'd get bored of in ten minutes... I love the Middle-eastern vibes of the sound...Would it have to be nylon strings?

I've played a fretless acoustic bass — steel strings. To be honest I found it quite bewildering but then no more sop than playing the violin or cello or bass I guess. There is something different about the attack fo the instrument which does sound more middle eastern in its origin – where fretless instruments are more of a tradition. I'm wondering whether he does have fret markets on the side of the fretboard even though he doesn't have frets!

If anyone finds any Youtube links of people playing fretless guitars post them in here - I've seen a few already but keen to hear more.
Found one Luthier who seems to specialise in Fretless acoustics, Turkish Luthier Can Oral. Nice guitars but it's a little dicey googling him by name!! ;P
