I just wondered if anybody else had watched and enjoyed the two part documentary as much as I did. What a wealth of musical talent!

earthbalm What documentary is it? That is something that I would love to see. Early this morning I was googling about Carole King (trying to remember the name of one of her songs) and the picture from the front cover of Tapestry came up. “Photographed at the window of her house in Laurel Canyon,” the caption read. I got to thinking about all the artists who lived there or met there and together they kind of make a soundtrack of my youth. So I’d love to see it. Don’t tell me it’s on Sky. I ain’t got Sky.

Sorry to disappoint you. It's on Sky I believe........

Hi Doc. It was Sky I'm afraid. It's available on catch up if you can blag time on the couch of somebody who does have Sky. Carole King and James Taylor were barely mentioned. But included were (and this won't be complete as it's from my failing memory): Mamas and Papas, Love, The Monkees, Frank Zappa, Alice Cooper, The Doors,The Byrds,Buffalo Springfield, CSN&Y, Gram Parson, The Turtles Little Feat and The Eagles. Stand out for me was somebody who I've never really given a listen - Joni Mitchell. The Troubadour was featured many times. I hadn't realised just what how important in that community Mama Cass was. I was just 5 during the Summer of Love but that music has always been a part of my conscious life.
Thanks for replying,
Dale

Yes, I did EB, I was in the process of discovering American singer songwriters at the time late '60s to, mostly, mid '70s. My "journey" started when I was encourged (!) to take a black-eyed beauty to the Cambridge Folk Festival to see Tom Rush. I didn't want to be impressed, but I was. He was from the east coast - Boston folk scene, but he sang songs by Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and others and they led me to Linda Ronstadt (I wish!) and Byrds, CSN and so many more. But for a small accident of birthplace, I could have been there, rather than Heathrow and Hammersmith!
It was a fascinating time and place, and gave the opportunity for many to develop their skills, those that survived the drink and drugs!

For anybody interested in the music of Carole King Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon I would heartily recommend this book which sadly is out of print but he’s probably available from the secondhand book site certainly a couple on some Amazon sites which does touch on the laurel canyon crowd although not a great deal www.simonandschuster.com/books/Girls-Like-Us/Sheila-Weller/9780743491488The other biography which does mention your canyon a lot is the biography of Mama Cass the name which escapes me but there shouldn’t be too many of those but there’s a lot about her time there with their Crosby and others

I got it out of the library a few years ago. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) it coincided with us having a new rescue pup who managed to chew the cover and first dozen pages so much that I had to pay the library and keep it!
