Just come across this fairly recent version. I found his singing to be quite moving -

This is brilliant Keith. About 50% of my guitar group say 'I can't sing' and for 7 years I have been encouraging them that 'singing' takes on different forms and doesn't have to be 'note perfect'. I have even demonstrated a few songs by more or less 'talking' through the lyric whilst playing and have named a few top performers who do not strictly 'sing' in the normally accepted way but are brilliant; I have quoted Knopfler as the prime example. Yes, there is a different skill in pulling it off, but it helps to break the myth of 'can't sing, won't sing' and all now join in. I will circulate this version of R&J to rub it in as at times he is literally just talking his way though it.

A truly wonderful rendition of one of my favourite songs. Better, in my view, in this semi-spoken way than with a perfect sweet voiced singer could ever put it over. Cohen, Dylan, Cash the list goes on, but all great in their own way.

I would love to be able to sing like Mark (Playing guitar like him would not be a bad thing). This is a wonderful version of a wonderful song that I must learn some day. colins, we share very similar taste in singers. I would throw JJ Cale in there.

Such a great song. Reminds me that it must be coming up to my annual attempt at trying to play it.

Thanks for sharing this, Keith. and thank you, too, for the link to the radio 2 piano room. so many great recordings! I'm just listening to Joan Armatrading and boy, she is still as great as she always has been.

+1 for Lou Reed as well on the ‘can’t sing but it works wonderfully’ club.
I find this interesting. Not saying for a moment that great song, sung by a great singer with great musical performance isnt what should be striven for.
Cohen, Dylan, Cash, Cale et al make us pause to think about what a great singer might be. Others will have a better view on what makes these individuals great singers but for me their ability ‘communicate’ the emotion and feel of a song is what gets them home. That + great timing. MK’s timing in the clip posted is impeccable.

Most people (if not everyone) can learn to Sing in some style or another. I’m glad some. Of you are encouraging those of more mature years to have a go. It is a great pleasure once you have realised what your voice can do AND have gotten used to hearing it. My favourite musical experiences have all involved ensemble singing.
