I'm trying to learn a tune that has some hybrid picking in it. I've never tried this before, so I'm finding it a bit challenging to say the least... I guess I'll get there eventually if I stick at it.
Does anybody use this technique? Any suggestions for songs/tunes that are good for beginners?

I have done it, but I find it really awkward. But then, I don't ever do anything blisteringly difficult with a plectrum, and maybe your piece needs it. If not, I'd just use fingers and thumb in the normal way.

stringdriventhing - It's certainly handy to mix strumming and fingerpicking in the same piece. I use it from time to time, though the fingerstyle aspect has to be simple; can't do any decent solo choons that way, just the odd bit of simple pattern or fill type of thing. I'd just keep banging on with the piece you need it for Gordon, plus maybe try a couple of patterns you would normally do with thumb and fingers one and two but instead using pick and fingers two and three. It is a bit weird, but worth being able to do now and then. On mando too from time to time. Keith

Yeah, normally I'd try to do it fingerstyle, but for this I don't think it'll sound right and the rest of the song requires moving straight to flat-picking with no real gap:

Ah, love it! I can play a version of it, but I can't get it to sound like Jimmy. I play it in standard and with a pick. I've never been one to try too hard to get anything to sound like a record.
Maybe I'll try this lesson. It's a great song. I do love songs about dogs.

Maybe I'll try this lesson. It's a great song. I do love songs about dogs. I used to try and play it years ago, with a pick and in open G, which is pretty much the same tuning - same intervals anyway. I could never get the first bit sounding right though which used to annoy me - the rest of it isn't too difficult if you get the strum pattern right. It's a pretty good lesson I think - I might look to see what else he's done.

It is a bit weird, but worth being able to do now and then. On mando too from time to time. I've been banging away as you suggested Keith and I can now more or less do the hybrid picking pattern, but nowhere near up-to-speed yet. I've discovered an interesting and potentially useful side-effect... When I play fingerstyle I almost exclusively use just my thumb, index and middle fingers - I very seldom use my ring finger. After hybrid picking away for a good few hours I tried playing a familiar fingerpicking tune my usual way and noticed that my ring finger was playing notes on the top E string that I'd usually hit with my index, without me consciously trying to make it do that. So maybe I'm going to get some extra dexterity in my ring finger out of this hybrid thing... an added bonus!
