I strum a bit and I'm slowly working my way through a rhythm guitar tutor but I'd like to get more into flat picking.
Any recommendations?
Thanks
Dave

I have quite a few flat-picking books and videos, and have spent a couple of years at the Artistworks site under the tutelage of Bryan Sutton. A good site to check out is www.flatpick.com/category_s/1844.htmThe site, and the linked series of books is very good (I have most of them). I also bought from them a package of about 12 years magazine back-issues and soundfiles on a memory stick. It's brilliant and is enough to keep me going for a lifetime. Bryan Sutton's site, and responses to submitted videos is brilliant, but it needs quite a commitment to really get the benefit. I prefer to work at my own (slow) pace. Steve Kaufman has got ton's of books out there, too. Again, I have a couple, and given patience, you can get some great results. My favourite flat-picker is David Grier, but he's from a different planet. Kenny Smith is another. I have DVDs from both, but they're just toooo good. And of course, there's lots of material from the late great Tony Rice - books and DVDs - but overall, checkout the link above. Derek

Love Russ Barenberg. Skip Hop and Wobble is one of my favourite flat-picking CDs. And has Jerry Douglas ever played a bad note?

Here's another cracker of his:
And it's only this past week that I found he played the guitar part on Ashokan Farewell... oh go on then :-)
Bet you've got Morgan Freeman in your head now :-)

First heard of Russ when Transatlantic Sessions appeared on the telly all those years ago. I have all the DVDs, but nice to see the vids above again. Not just a v skilled player, but a v tasteful and musical one too, esp when playing with others. Thanks Michael and Derek for posting these.

The first and second rule of Flatpicking
1, getting your down ups in the right order is essential 2, rules can be broken but only when you have reached a grammy award-wining status

The first and second rule of Flatpicking 1, getting your down ups in the right order is essential A habit I'm finding annoyingly difficult to break! I'm so ingrained to do DUDU etc that now I'm struggling to play D on every string change (as per the Gypsy Jazzers). It's not a major problem, but it's surprisingly hard to break that ingrained habit.
