Has anyone ordered stuff from our estranged cousins in Europe since good ole Brexit? For example Thomann and DV247. I just wondering about getting hit with import costs when it arrives.
Sometimes I don't know where This dirty road is taking me
I ordered some high pressure steel wheel valves [ unavailable here] from Germany last week ...arrived three days later ...was notified by Parcelforce that they'd been received and passed through customs...no duty to pay but only £25 's worth...
Just received a couple of sets of machine heads for ukulele from Thonmann with no problems. If goods are less than £135 then the seller adds the VAT to the advertised price and that's that and all is pretty much as before. If it is £135 or more then things start to get a little grey when the courier takes over some costs and may add some of their own on. So in addition to VAT you might have import coasts plus courier handling costs.
My purchase was advertised without VAT. Thonmann added VAT (on goods only) and delivery charge at checkout so you can see exactly what you're paying before you commit. Job done, delivered in 4 days and £10 less than anywhere else.
I've the fear of charges in the opposite direction. There are accounts of upcharges on goods FROM the UK to Ireland. I've bought some items from forum members before but I'm nervous about perusing the classifieds at the moment. VAT applied on items over 22 euro, and additional customs and VAT on items over 150 euro.
My concern as an old guy with (probably) all the instruments I'll ever need, is that either I, or my kith and kin, will one day need to sell my stuff. The EU would be a significant part of the market, but selling used items via ebay, Reverb etc., will attract local VAT for the buyer, so, effectively, they either won't bother to buy from the UK, or we will need to reduce prices by 20-30%. to make them viable sales items.
Also, buying used items from the EU will cost an equivalent upcharge.

That, apparently, is what we voted for.
I have had my eye on a particular guitar in a shop in the Netherlands for a couple of years (that's how long it's been there). The price has been reduced for sale to the UK presumably because they will not have to pay sales tax in Holland if they sell to the UK but I will have to pay the duty when it arrives here. Sadly we won't have that option if we sell because private sales don't include VAT.
If I do get around to buying it (I'll probably have to sell first and hope it is still there) I will work out whether it is cheaper to go there and pay local tax or import.

Yeah, I got in just before the Brexit for my Lowden, from UK to Italy last October. Free shipping and no extra tax or duties. Shudder to think what the import tax and fees would be on a £6.5k guitar now...

It would easily add £1.5k to the cost - probably more, but the retailer would avoid Italian sales tax and would, presumably, pass that on. You'd still be liable for import tax and VAT is payable on the total cost of guitar and courier. If Italian VAT is higher than UK that might compensate for the import tax.
ocarolan: Eventually you will, Andy - all the best.

newdave: I bought a Lyle Lovett album from a charity shop. Just put it on. This guy is great. How have I never heard his music before? Mind. Blown. If I was Julia Roberts I'd have ridden him till his wheels fell off.
