This is well worth watching and should rattle a few cages!

I predict an epiphonic epidemic of GAS

The prices are certainly keen, and Indonesian manufacture; not sure if this means they are made in an Epiphone factory, or made under contract by someone else (there are apparently some very good manufacturers there). There is a blindfold A/B comparison on the Andertons website, although no substitute for trying them for real.

He is quite right regarding AQS, by the way; many experiences of being both pleasantly and unpleasantly surprised when actually sitting down and trying a specific guitar.

If you follow this guy's channel, you will find him a bit biased both ways according to brand. Very good player, though..

I suspects he has played a lot of Gibsons which are notoriously variable in quality. Before lockdown I played four J45s at my local Guitar Guitar and found exactly the same as he did. They all have varied quality, different necks and different levels of playability. In my ears the best sounding guitar was the most basic!
What I do like about JP is that he highlights quality, price and value for money. Many — indeed most — players simply can't afford the prices that we often see banded around for great sounding guitars. I've nothing against those who can and who chose to pay very high prices for collectables but we see prices inflated for finishing that is not about sound and – I often think — prices inflated because of brand and reputation.

My main instrument is: probably needing new strings

I agree 100% with what he said. But it didn't stop me buying myself a slope-shouldered, tobacco sunburst Gibson J45 when I had the chance. And I don't *care* if I could have got a better guitar cheaper, it wouldn't have been a slope-shouldered, tobacco sunburst Gibson J45.

leoroberts I fully agree. Perhaps we should start a "Shallow Owners of Guitars" club (awkwardly worded to avoid confusion). Much as I admire the Epiphone Inspired by Gibson range, I shan't be buying one, but I might buy a Gibson. Strangely, though, I don't feel the same about Fender Telecasters. But I do care about the colour. Truly, truly shallow. I also like shiny rather than satin. Proves my point.

I'm certainly not oing to comment on shallow preferences for shiny things!
I have just checked the guitar Guitar website for Gibson J45s. They range in price from £3,800 for the Vintage Sunburst to £1,400 for a walnut J45. I've playted both of these guitars and I thought the walnut not only sounded better was was a better neck as well. Despite having their name on their guitars (which I certainly get) Gibson are an infuriating company!
I have some time on Friday. I might just have to go and do a comparison test!

I liked the sounds of the 3 Epiphones played by John in his GSWJ video, especially the Hummingbird. But I also liked the sounds of the Gibsons played in the Andertons video. I felt the Gibsons did sound a little better than the Epiphones but its very much a law of diminishing returns.
How much should a guitar cost? - as much as the market will bear. Always has been and always will. It's no accident that when Mandolin Brothers was still trading, owner Stan Jay called his store a "Dream Fulfillment Center". He wasn't selling guitars he was selling the "I always wanted one of these" dream. And there's nothing wrong with that.
I think what's changed in recent years is that the far east manufacturers are producing guitars having a more consistent quality than their American cousins. Some Gibsons (and Martins) are superb instruments but others aren't. My gigging guitars are now an Eastman acoustic and a Gretsch resonator.

Interesting video, thank you. I'm not a fan of American 'dreads' both the way they look (too chinzy and flashy for me personally), and the sound (a bit too twangy for me). But the history and the passion by this man is great.

I'm slowly working through his Life on Music autobiographical series which is fascinating and after about 10 episodes becomes quite addictive!

I suspect I'm not the only one of us who could also be called a "Shallow Non-Owner" of a particular guitar. I once decided not to buy a guitar I liked very much because although it sounded great, played nicely and was very reasonably priced, it came with a truly horrifying pickguard.
Shallow? Undoubtedly. But any of you who remember Stonebridge/Furch's "sick-dalmation pickguard" phase will understand.
