Shall we have a virtual Eurovision party thread on Saturday?
I love me a bit of Eurovision.
Used to watch it every year as a kid and then in my mid/late teens decided I was too cool for it. Came back to it a while ago and now love it more than ever.

I remember seeing Graham Norton on stage and he said that Terry Wogan gave him invaluable advice when he handed over hosting Eurovision to Graham. He said don't open the wine until song no 8. I enjoy Eurovision too, but a glass or two does help.

I enjoy Eurovision too, but a glass or two does help. Definitely. I'm sure I read somewhere that europop in that quantity and and concentration has to be diluted in a lot of alcohol or you risk an attack of discombobulation. And sometimes even the heebie-jeebies. Which can be fatal. Or so I've heard.

This is one of my favourite songs in recent years, called "For You". It was Georgia's entry in 2018 and to my disappointment it didn't get past the semi-final stage and wasn't heard in the main competition. I think the lyrics are lovely and really suit the music they are matched with. Lyrics translated here: Day – be longer And melt the snow To warm up the one, who felt cold in the night Shine for us Not for me Make the heart feel joyful for the others happiness The sun rises in time To grant people warmness And the earth keeps turning with love Let understand the feelings of others, share with others What is the heart, break into pieces to share with others The wind will carry the rest away You own only what you share Day breaks the night If I am by your side; Something ends and there comes a new start Kindness will live forever on the earth For you For love For just one flash We go on our way All is yours, what you share Edit: It you want to match the translation with the actual lyrics to hear how the music and lyrics gel together line-by-line then you can see them side-by-side and listen at the same time here.

This is another classic from 2018 (a great year imo).
Beardy Vikings from Denmark giving it the good stuff.

I guess you guys must have a morbid fascination for shite. No. Just me. But actually just like writing for tabloid newspapers or Mills & Boon, popular songs aint easy. Most people think they could do it, look down on those who do do it, and fail spectacularly if they ever try to do it. I love this sweet, sentimental ditty from Lithuania called When We're Old (another from that classic year 2018 - I'm revisiting it at the moment which is why I'm posting from it). It's also worth pointing out that if you don't like a thread the option to simply ignore it is always there.

I'm glad you have found something you really love. Here's a non-Eurovision song that I'm sure you'll appreciate, too.

You've got a new guitar to play with, @lakewoodlad, that should take your mind off stuff for a bit. If you're into Eurovision that's up to you. It's fairly clear that Graham isn't - that's up to him I look forward to hearing what the Koa guitar sounds like - though maybe you should have bought a Waterloo (see what I did there?)

graynWell you've successfully managed to make me feel like a piece of shit. Are you happy now? Not at all. You and I see that lovely contest completely differently. If my bit of taking the pee out of it genuinely made you feel like shit, then I apologise, as that was not my intention. I hope you enjoy this year's show. As you might imagine, I won't be tuning in.

Ahhh. The classic non-apology and it was just a joke defence. You shit on something that I care about just because you had the opportunity and then try to make out that I shouldn't mind. You didn't listen to any of the songs I posted and you certainly didn't pay any attention to "It's also worth pointing out that if you don't like a thread the option to simply ignore it is always there.". As you can imagine, I will be stepping back from the forum for a while.

I'm glad you have found something you really love. Here's a non-Eurovision song that I'm sure you'll appreciate, too. I'm actually quite fond of this now in a funny sort of way but at the time I was into rock/prog rock et. and still am to a certain extent. I guess it's a nostalgia thing for the 70's where I passed through my teenage years. I don't think I have watched Eurovison since then and I think the turning point was Waterloo which I hated and still do. ABBA of course went on to write much, much better things than Waterloo........... The 70's decade was the best and certainly music wise in my opinion

No, don’t do that Dave, you’re an enthusiastic member, and I think that is valuable here. I enjoy your contributions.
Eurovision is a real ‘Marmite’ affair; some people love it, some hate it, others enjoy it as a spectacular helping of cheese, with nationalistic bloc voting and a general sense of injustice
The biggest injustice is, of course, that “My Lovely Horse” didn’t win.
It’s certainly not worth falling out over

The 70's decade was the best and certainly music wise in my opinion For some background - which you probably know Phil, but I'm in one of my 'that's fascinating!' moods - rather good bass player Herbie Flowers read a book on writing hit songs and while he was ruminating on what he could use as a hook his doorbell rang... Music-wise my heart is is in the sixties, but for sheer quality the thirties have it for me. Ellington, Berlin, the Gershwins, Porter and all those great musical minds like Fletcher Henderson and the Dorseys to name only a few.
