A while ago on here, RosieTGC hinted that there might be a new model in the offing... Here it is - a Turnstone Dreadnought. Looks alright, I suppose. Sounds decent...

Not keen on the look of these sort of guitars but it has undoubtedly superb workmanship and it sounds excellent in Michael's hands leoroberts . My question is however, is it a 'modified' dreadnought? If not perhaps it's a marketing and cost uplift opportunity lost?

Rosie is quite explicit that it is NOT a modified dread.
I’ve bugger all idea what a modified dreadnought is anyway, if I’m honest! 12 frets? Thinner body? Available in pink? 😀

I think it’s marketing myself ………..or a load of cobblers 🙂

Yup, Larry, that's where the name comes from. RosieTGC carves a stylised bird symbol into the headstock of each guitar

A beautiful guitar, with Michael's masterful playing and yet I wasn't wowed by the tone of the guitar, finger or flatpicked. Sonically it didn't stand out for me, at all.

This is from Ervin Somogyi's site:
The Mod-D. or M.D. (Modified Dreadnought) is my proprietary shape; it grew out of the very traditional Martin Dreadnought guitar. That guitar was designed for musicians who stood when they played; my version is designed for musicians who sit. As such, it offers a waist and a better center-of-balance. This model was furthermore invented before luthiers were calling their own models showy names like the “Shenandoah”, the “Il Padrone”, the “Grand Tetons”, etc. (these are names I’ve thought up, by the way; I don’t think anyone actually uses them). I had modified the canonical Dreadnought guitar, and simply called it the “modified dreadnought” at the time. The name stuck.

The bridge, rosette, and headstock is a bit dark in contrast to the very light body, I guess some may love it, but it's a bit too much of a contrast for me. Sounds bloody ace, really balanced, and not as boomy/bassy as I imagined it would.

I'm more of a mandolin aficionado these days but i still found this interesting. I don't have the acoustic analysis skills needed to hear the finer subtleties of a musical instrument like this - some day, perhaps. I'd like to be able to analyse sound the way Michael Watts does. Well worth making the video I think. It made me think, thanks.

Hello all!
It was a real pleasure to try this impressive instrument - I've known Rosie for several years now and she has really evolved as an artist in that time.
For those of you unfamiliar with the Modified Dreadnought concept - it's essentially a solo fingerstyle guitar design that marries the power and response of a good dread with a design that makes it more suitable for the solo performer in terms of sonics and ergonomics. It has also become something of a buzzword in the past decade or so with many luthiers attempting an MD design but few truly understanding the concept.
There is a lot more going on in a Somogyi MD than Ervin generally shares but having played several over the years I can confirm that it works!
You can learn more in this video
All the best
Michael
