This video came on my YouTube subscriptions feed the other day. When I saw it the video was less than an hour since release. I clicked on the TNAG link and it was sold.
What a beautiful thing it is and they don't hang around even at that price point!! Anyone on here buy it?
Phil

That is substantially more than I paid for my first house! I must be even older than I thought.

Interesting, clearly the bubble has not yet burst in terms of ultra high end guitars and what people are prepared to pay for them. I recall when Jason first set out on his own, a number of my pals got in before subsequent price hikes - Jonny Mosco of this parish was one. Those guitars have at least tripled in price in the meantime.
Stefan Sobell is offering a strictly limited run of his "anniversary" guitars, each made with some of his best Brazilian stash. At 15K a pop they are a downright bargain, particularly since they may turn out to be Stefan's swan song, in terms of building.
I am lucky enough to have a pretty good collection of guitars, the most expensive of which is my Sands M-12 from "The Tree". It did not cost me anything like as much as the Kostal featured here though.
Cheers,
Ian

A lovely instrument, no doubt.
But is it really built better and does it sound better than a custom Lakewood or Furch, that you could probably buy for £5k and get change for a kebab and a cab home?
Does the high in "high end" mean quality or status? Because they are not the same thing.

Does the high in "high end" mean quality or status? Because they are not the same thing. Ultimately the question can only be answered by those willing to pay the considerable upcharge for their instruments. Presumably they consider the price to be worth it, otherwise why bother ? I would assert though that, after a certain price point, the law of diminishing returns will start to set in. Cheers, Ian

But is it really built better and does it sound better than a custom Lakewood or Furch, that you could probably buy for £5k and get change for a kebab and a cab home? Some, but only some, of that price is due to materials. Sets from "The Tree" are increasingly expensive to get hold of due to rarity, and this does affect the price. As to whether you think that "The Tree" premium is worth it, from a tone and aesthetics perspective, is a moot point. I didn't go down that route, although I might be tempted to pay extra for some high quality Brazilian Rosewood tonewood - especially as I don't own a Braz guitar. "Sounds better" may be a subjective thing.

That certainly is a beautiful-looking and great-sounding guitar (with that guy playing it anyway). But £32k?... someone, somewhere is having a laugh.

Nah.
Anyone can answer the question. Opinions are still free (although possibly not for much longer!).

Stefan Sobell is offering a strictly limited run of his "anniversary" guitars, each made with some of his best Brazilian stash. At 15K a pop they are a downright bargain, particularly since they may turn out to be Stefan's swan song, in terms of building. When's yours arriving then, Ian? Back to the original post, I don't think anybody could say it was anything other than an extraordinary guitar. I have seen and heard at least three of Jason's guitars, but I haven't played one. They are all amazing instruments. I wouldn't buy one, though, even if I had the money (which I don't!). In my hands, a guitar of this value is wasted for several reasons: 1) My ability is limited. This is of lesser importance, however, but I couldn't make it sound better than one of my guitars costing a tenth of the price. However, if I owned it, it wouldn't be played to its fullest potential, and someone else could exploit it better. Why take it away from them? 2) As Ian said, the law of diminishing returns applies here. I would draw far more satisfaction from owning several guitars of good quality than I would owning one of superlative quality (as this is). 3) I wouldn't want to take it out anywhere (I'm not even sure I'd be comfortable playing it at home!). So noone but me would hear it. What a shocking waste that would be. I would also be apprehensive about anybody else playing it. 4) Amazingly gorgeous though it is, I am afraid I can't discern the tonal improvement of a guitar made from "the tree" compared with a guitar made from a tree of similar species. I'm almost positive that the special quality of the guitar comes from Mr Kostal's hands rather than the atmospheric and soil qualities of Belize. My opinion. While they're free and I'm allowed to hold one!

My opinion. While they're free and I'm allowed to hold one! I charge £10 per opinion Seriously though, with this particular guitar I think we have moved out of the realm of it being a mere musical instrument and more into the area of it being an artwork, a collector's item - an object made valuable by the exclusivity of the maker and the materials used as much as anything else. Nothing especially wrong with that - people blow millions on paintings, ornaments, memorabilia and the like after all, so this is small fry in the scheme of things. If I had £32k floating about I would definitely not spend it on this, but I hope whoever bought it enjoys it... I'll probably hear the screams from here when the first ding goes on it.

I'm still upset about the ding in my Yamaha LL36 from a few months ago.
I'd have to renounce the world and embrace a life of repentance, good works and self-flagellation if I put a ding in that thing.
Or else just relax and play it.
Yeah. The second one. That sounds good.
