I think he has a point. Folk for the nice MOR folks. Not my cup of tea.

Yes, the blog author has a point but I can equally imagine the same sort of post (had the technology existed) being written in the 60s/70s ... "Please don't like Steeleye Span/Albion Band/Fairport Convention - they're just doing folk with a rock beat and some electric instruments to be popular, don't fall into their trap" For what it's worth, I'd rather have 'fire' rhymed with 'desire' than with the two-syllabled words (like "higher") with which it is normally twinned. Are the Mumfords folk musicians? or an acoustic band? James Taylor is quite MOR, isn't he? Ralph McTell certainly is! So, I have no problem with Mumford & Sons, those of you who've heard my songs will know that I have no problem with middle of the road stuff, either... but then, I quite like James Blunt so what do I know?

I've given those boring buggers a chance, even bought Sigh No More on spec, but I can't be arsed with them any more.
They're cod folk with all the edges knocked off, with no fire in the engine room furnace, with a catalogue of very poor, derivative songs and utterly anodyne playing.
The bands and artist Leo cites, Steeleye et al, cannot be compared. The folk rockers always had an original voice and streams of ideas, and the Mumfords have yet to produce anything to challenge original songs of the calibre of Carolina In My Mind or Peppers and Tomatoes. I know the Mumfords' stuff has an audience, but why listen to them when you have access to original and fulfilling artists like June Tabor and the Oysters, Chris Wood, Thompo or Emily Portman, to name but a few? It's a bit like preferring Herman's Hermits to The Beatles or Glenn Miller to Duke Ellington. Their only redeeming quality for me is that they might provide a gateway to the real thing. Might.
Right, that's put paid to them. Now, as for Gandhi...

I'm not saying that Steeleye, etc SHOULD be compared ... I was merely saying that I could imagine 'folk purists' getting in a huff about them and not considering them 'proper' folk. Of course, they may well have been the sort of bands that inspired the Mumfords who may well be the sort of band who inspire.... You get my point. Or maybe you don't. And it doesn't matter either way

Irrespective of "labels", I've never been keen on the Mumfords. My daughters (20-somethings)like them, so I suppose that's right and proper!

big yes from me but then i'm fairly new to this folk stuff, my roots being mainly rock, (the who the stones} though I did get a taste for folk when I see some one you may know called Johnathan Kelly many years ago and have dipped in and out since, now for me my favourite folk? group is Frank Turner not traditional by far but music can't stand still in order to pull the younger generation....for me no labels or comparison's, if I like it it's good, if I don't... don't mean it ain't good

I've always thought that Mumford and Sons were for people who didn't know any better.
