Well after a very long journey my new guitar has arrived. Since I am heavily left handed the choice of left handed high end guitars is limited to say the least. This purchase was a significant birthday age present so I was going to treat myself, or so I thought. I tried a few Gibsons but did not get on with the neck. I then tried several Martin guitars but all had some sort of production damage or issues, so they all went back. Believe me when I say that I was not being picky, they all had problems which for a 3K guitar I just could not believe.
Anyway, one day I was watching a video of someone at Anderson's playing an Atkins OM and my work mate, who knows nothing about guitar came over and said “ bloody hell that sounds good”!.
So my enquires started. I could not find any lefties but handled a few right handed. Biting the bullet I phone Atkins and spoke to Alistair.
I have read many messages of complaints about people not getting e mails being returned, and I experienced that to, but if you phone it will be picked up and he does give you all the time you need. I was extremely twitchy about putting down a deposit on something I had not seen but I gave a shot.
They were very good at listening to all my concerns. My only requests were, a shiny finish which they call ‘mirror’, a 45mm nut, and a diamond carve at the back of the nut which my other guitars have.
this was in October, and today it came.
the build quality is outstanding. The mahogany looks great has a nice colour and the gloss body is outstanding. The bone nut and saddle are very good. The neck ebony unlike Martin has not been dyed black and you can see the quality of the wood. Frets are great also.
I have a Furch OM and an Eastman 20OM which are both rosewood, but the Atkins is outstanding both for finger style and strumming. It resonates much more than expected and it has a wonderful tone. It comes with a good quality case and unlike other American manufacturers comes with a limited lifetime warranty for the uk.
I am extremely please with the purchase and feel he has excelled himself this time.
if you are in the market and can afford it I would definitely recommend the make. I will try and add a photo but with all the reflections I doubt it will be any good.
