Hello All,
It has been a while - I hope you are all well
I have posted on here before about my frozen shoulder and looking for a smaller guitar. I impulse bought a used Wee Lowden WL-35 special. Which for £3k is probably my largest impulse buy ever. We did not get on. It was a great size for my shoulder, but i just hated the sound. I seemed to hear a weird buzz that no one else could hear - even after I had it re-set up. So we parted ways. Also, as if by magic, my shoulder unfroze just before I was about to have surgery.
Since then I have had some guitar money burning a hole in my pocket and today I got the chance to spend some time in a guitar shop.
I really wanted a smaller body guitar as i have a large body acoustic. I had read good things about the new Taylor GT shape. I was convinced I would get the GT 811e which is near top of the range, rosewood/spruce and all the appointments and around £2800. I was a bit underwhelmed. The shape is nice and the guitar is beautiful, but the sound just didn't do it for me. Something a bit muffled to my ears, it just didn't really pop. I tried a few others in the similar price range - a Maton TE, Atkin LG47, Martin 00-17. All really nice - the Atkin LG47 was the best. I then saw the Taylor GTe which is the same shape as the GT811e, but more than £1000 cheaper. It is Urban Ash back and sides with a spruce top. It is a lot more stripped back, less bling and natural finish. I loved it, the sound was bright and full and it just felt right. I love the natural finish, the Urban Ash has a real grain to it.
I went for a bite to eat while i thought about it. I was a bit worried that I would regret not getting the higher end guitar as i may not get the chance again. However, the other way round would be far worse. Over-spending and not loving the guitar. So I went and bought the GTe - as a billy bonus, whilst Googling to find out what the hell Urban Ash is, i saw that it was available elsewhere for £230 less. So I managed to get the guitar price matched for £1399.
This week I will be sure to play it as much as possible. I will post some pics and some more thoughts.
