I hatched a cunning plan last Sunday and I'm pleased to say it worked out really well!
With my daughter being away for a few days, I asked my good lady out for lunch and we made our way into Glasgow. The cunning part was choosing a venue directly round the corner from GuitarGuitar
I'd played a superb Martin OM28 1931 Authentic in there, but could in no way justify (or afford) the cost of this beast. I wanted another go and took my unwitting accomplice with me.
Going in, I immediately went to the guitar I had in mind and played it - just as amazing as I remembered - I did try quite a few others as well, including a £10k dealer special custom shop OM (very blingy) which was lovely but not as good sounding.
As I played, my better half went looking for alternatives, using the usual selection criteria:
"This one is lovely and curvy.....ooh, that red one is nice.....feel this, it's so smooth! ' etc
She then picked up a very striking dreadnought and said she loved it and I should try it. It was an Epiphone Frontier, a reissue of an early Epiphone acoustic guitar (pre-Gibson), in spruce and maple.
Initially I wasn't keen. It's not what I had in mind at all I told her, but she insisted, so I tried it. I loved it. Surprisingly warm, rounded tones, sounded equally good strummed or picked and felt lightweight and lively. The neck was excellent - Gibson-esque profile, with slightly fuller shoulders, filling my hand nicely.
I played it (and the Martin) for about an hour. I didn't need another guitar. I really didn't need another dreadnought. We went for a coffee to think about it.
10 minutes later I knew I had to get it - couldn't wait to finish the coffee and dashed back over, suddenly paranoid it would be sold
It hadn't sold and I bought it. Yes, it's a bit kitsch, but in my mind its extremely cool-looking, feels wonderful and sounds devine.
I no longer have my J200 (I'm fickle, remember), so I needed something to go with my fringed suede shirts. This is it.
Sorry the pics are not mine, but I'll get some up asap if I can.
