I mean, I have a fairly small body frame and thin arms. But I was struggling to get my arm inside my Vintage Giltrap acoustic to hold the inside of the jack attachment securely while it was being tightened outside.
There is a 12" distance from the nearest edge of the soundhole to the tail of the guitar - is this a bit more than usual? Or maybe my arm although thin is a bit short?
The guitar has the type of end pin jack with the strap button attached to the end of it. With a nut outside and another nut inside the guitar body to hold the jack in place in the right position.
Over time the gradual loosening of the nut inside the jack and periodic tightening of the nut outside leads to a loose jack despite the outside nut being tightened as far as possible (it can't be tightened more as it hits the larger portion of the jack). Then the joy of finding as well as a loose jack that the plug in function ceases to work because it doesn't reach the right place to connect.
So began the removal of the strap button and outside nut and threading an old thin guitar string through the little hole to secure it all from outside the guitar body and make retrieving it all from inside the body easier once adjustments are made to the nut on the jack that holds it inside the body.
Trial and error (often the latter with me ) getting the right amount of jack sticking out of the guitar.
I believe it's about 1/32 of an inch of usable thread length on the outside part of the jack to get the right distance for the jack plug to operate. So it's a fine margin.
Lots of string loosening and tightening for every failed attempt. But, oh the happy relief when it works again.
I do have it fixed but as regards the future is there any sort of replacement jack unit for these electro acoustics that doesn't have the problem of an inner nut loosening and having to delve around inside the guitar?
Or any sort of tip to prevent the inner nut loosening?
