A truly wonderful song. Wish I'd written it.

|Hello there, thanks for that.
I've not heard him or the song before, and I think he sums it all up nicely, with just enough scorn, and a smidge of sympathy...
Best regs PeterH

Completely new to me too but a great piece of song writing performed vey well with, as PeterH says, the right balance of sardonic empathy.

Yes.. a fabulous song. We were lucky enough to see him perform the song when the Darwin project material was played as a concert at the 2009 Shrewsbury folk fest. There is a an excellent DVD available of the results of the project...many lovely songs performed by some of my favourite musicians! Here's another fine song from the project...Krista Detor's "Clock of the World"...

Great songs.
All the songs I've heard from the project seem superb. Much more so than the Cecil Sharp project (for which I do have the cd). I like this one, too:
I often find Chris Wood's songs almost cinematic in their storytelling. This is one of those. The guitar playing and hypnotic quality of his voice almost takes you to the doldrums in a square rigger. Then he gets to the last 2 lines, and the point of the song is revealed. Wonderful songwriting.

PS I bet Leo could find a rhyme for "ichneumon wasp" 'Wasp' is, like 'orange' one of the few words that doesn't have a natural rhyme in the English language... however, a litytle research tells me that they belong to the higher classification of Apocrita and the lower classification of Braconidae - both of which have plenty of scope I liked Mark O'Reilly's song - but have no idea why he chose to spell his name so weirdly.

Just been listening to this stuff again - CD arrived this morning - it is helping to make bathroom tile grouting marginally less irksome!
Is it me, or do other people find listening to a "real" CD more satifying than a "virtual" one like the same tracks on Amazon's Cloud Player? Maybe it's to do with "possession" and trying to read the sleeve notes? Still not a patch on the whole vinyl LP experience though - and I can read the sleeve notes far more easily on those!
