My diary seems empty if I don't have a few concerts booked and I have some luxuries to look forward to in the darker months ahead.
First is Quicksilver at our local Mansfield Folk Club; I haven't seen them but main singer is Hillary Spencer who was with my favourite acapello group, Artisan.
Then there is Kate Rusby at Newark in September; will be my third time to see her and she always performs well (and is rather lovely too!).
Less lovely to look at is Ralph McTell who we go to see in October; haven't seen him live before so looking forward to it. Streets of London was first song I ever sang in public (too many years ago to admit).
And, for second year in a row, Fairport Convention next February in Chesterfield; ugliest of the lot no doubt but great music.
Room to fit in a few more if anything good and local comes up.

I always feel v smug with two or three lots of concert tickets pinned to the notice board. Trouble is, I'm not feeling smug atm - no tickets booked at all - . Used to be able to rely on the Brewhouse in Taunton for some good music now and again, but it closed unceremoniously earlier this year, and the Bridgwater Arts Centre has been temporarily out of action too. Thought I'd be able to rely on Weston Playhouse for something good in the next few months, but no. Well, they do have Seth Lakeman....but I'll be in Halifax for HB4 then! Pleased to see some good gigs lined up for you FFJ, and Andrew and Phil too - blow-by-blow accounts expected of course! Keith

Gigs? Gigs, you say. I remember those. The heady days of the Glasgow Apollo, The Barrowland Ballroom and King Tuts Wah Wah Hut seem so long ago... Since I moved here to the back of beyond gigs have become a distant memory. Got Martin Simpson eighty miles away in November. A chap called Scooter Muse appearing in the Plockton Inn a little later this summer. For all you banjo fans, he's something of a player. Pete Price was in the Inn last week.
Duncan Chisholm pops in sometimes. And the kids from the National School of Excellence in Traditional Music. And Dougie Pincock of the Battlefield Band.
Hmm, maybe it's not all that bad here.
Still miss the Apollo though...

A good collection of early stuff from his first three LPs there Phil - a couple of dud tracks, but some lovely ones too. I first taught myself to fingerpick from his first two LPs when they came out a very long time ago! Keith

Keith as soon as I watched a clip yesterday of streets of London which I enjoyed, but the fingerstyle playing he does I really liked, just the sound of the guitar was ace, and even if he just played and didn't sing I could happily listen to this style for ages. He has a good voice don't get me wrong, but I love the sound of his playing Is it just classed as normal fingerpicking or something else? I also like roger davies style of play who picks but also has odd strums in between if that makes sense? again is their a word for the style?? Is it travis picking or is that totally different?

I try not to categorise styles of fingerpicking, (though many people might disagree strongly with me on that) as most players tend to use combinations of several, and there is always disagreement as to what does/does not constitute a particular style. Mr McTell tends to use a mixture of approaches (including the odd back of fingernails strums) and though some songs may have a basis in a regular pattern he integrates nice basslines and fills plus melody/harmony fragments as well in a way that intertwines with the words superbly. I used only regular repeating patterns for song accomp until I heard Ralph's first two LPs, when I realised there was more than just patterns going on there. Trying to copy those things broke down my reliance on repetitve picking patterns and helped me begin to play more interestingly. Learning regular patterns is certainly the simplest way to start developing finger/thumb independence though, and can provide a very effective accomp to many songs. Beyond that there's a lfetime of learning - I'm still at it. Not a very helpful reply really Phil - sorry!! Keith

It'd be interesting to compare your views to mine (although I guess we're both agreed on "Girl On A Bicycle) I'd've gone for "Summer Come Along" but it doesn't feature so, if I had to pick another, 'twould be "Spiral Staircase"

And Spiral Staicase. The "duds" for me in that collection would be Blues in more than 12 bars and Wait until the snow . But, they were a long time ago, and he's getting better. One day he'll be really good!!! Keith
