I turned a big number this year and a few year ago I decided two order two guitars based on my two major influences Country Blues and UK fingerstyle folk.
Country Blues.
At the start of the pandemic I sold my two Waterloo guitars and missed the light weight ladder braced sound. I follow the Fretboard Journal podcast and a couple of years ago they interviewed Jack Tarlington of Wandering Boy Guitars. I liked his story and his guitars looked cool and were championed by Matt Sweeney one of my favourite players.
It was great to find out that Jack is based in Australia too.
Jack is also featured in Fretboard Journal issue 49.
Fast forward to September and we are driving the 7 hours home from a family holiday at Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary back to Brisbane. Just before the Queensland border we stopped at Wandering Boy Guitars to pick up my new guitar. Didn’t stay too long as it was pouring and I had two kids under 10 wanting to get home and we still had over 2 hours left to drive.
I wanted a small bodied guitar, ladder braced with a wide nut. All of Jack’s guitars are unique and are based on Vintage Stella guitars. I liked the floral decals on these original Guitars and Jack showed me some photos of an original Regal guitar with floral decals and we decided to go with his version of this.
Old Sitka spruce top, Mahogany back and side and French polished.
13.25” lower bout
24.75” scale
1.8” nut
Ladder braced
Floral water-slide decal.
Lovely V shape neck
Beautiful multicolour purfling and rosette.
I’ve had this guitar about 6 weeks and I’m really happy with it. It’s the lightest guitar I’ve owned and It’s very addictive to play with a great feeling neck.
It’s allot louder than the small size belies and has a smaller body than my 00-12s.
It’s great for Mississippi John Hurt and Robert Johnson picking and works well with a slide. It’s also good for Dave Rawling style playing and general fingerstyle.
