Just about to buy yet another tripod boom mic stand and am determined that this time I will buy something that will last more than 5 minutes. Be really grateful for any advice. Using for mic'ing an acoustic and currently tend to use a Sure SM57 but do on occasions use a fairly large condenser mic so ideally looking for a stand that will cope with a slightly heavier mic that won't fall over as soon as you look at it!

Hercules or Quiklok have always proved reliable for me.. I've never had a Hercules but I've been using Quiklok stuff for as long as they've been around and it is superb quality. However, did an in-depth search for QL boom stands today and came up with absolutely nothing in the UK. I will have anther look at Hercules and thanks fir the nod!

I've got four given to me by a fellow muso who moved to the US . They are at least fifty years old and solid as rocks, but H-E-A-V-Y! Thing is, I don't use 'em any more. He also gave me a simple straight up stand with a cast iron base. I only use a single large condenser nowadays.

I've got a Gravity stand which I like, it's solid and seems well-made, think it's this one or something similar.

Has to be a Behringer, older model with the cast metal base for the 3 legs & adjustable extension arm...if you can find one...I've had one for nearly 30years....never failed or moved in a gigging situation or the older Shure USA model again with the cast base.....

I would love to find an old and heavy stand as virtually everything seems to be designed around being lightweight. I'd much prefer a hefty boom stand that just didn't move rather than an ultralight modern stand that falls over if you look at it. I occasionally use an SE2200 condenser and although not massive or particularly heavy most of the boom arms I've owned have struggled to keep the mic aloft.

Never heard of these but the stand in the link looks like it is really excellent quality. At over 4Kg they are a decent weight and the clamp and the foot at the base look really rugged. Great suggestion thank you!

I found that the Hercules tripod boom stands worked well.

I have a couple of Gravity stands and they seem very well made. Although I'm still using a mic stand I got for less than a tenner in Maplins 15-odd years ago at most gigs, so my benchmark may be quite low.
For a heavy condenser mic, I would tend to use a solid metal-based stand as they are much less prone to wobbling over - in fact the need for a solid-based stand for recording mics is what led me to start buying Gravity stands in the first place.

Thought I'd update this and confirm that I ended up with a Gravity boom mic stand. Many thanks to gsans for putting the idea in my head, I'd never heard of Gravity and it turns out they are really well made, solid stands and not that expensive either. Just over £40 delivered. Also many thanks for PistolPete for suggesting a solid steel base rather than a tripod; not a big fan of tripod stands and found a Gravity stand with a solid base and there is no chance it's going to tip with a large mic on the boom. The base weighs 3.5 Kg and stays glued to the floor. I can heartily recommend this stand, it's a Gravity MS2322B. Can't find any issues with it at all.
