Thought it would be interesting to hear what members thought. (You're not allowed to post your own!!!).
I think this is my favorite for many reasons.
--Thomas Earle has such a great laid back style and his playing matches his songs.
--He plays a lot in Open tunings (this one in Open D) which I really find stimulating. I have exchanged notes with him and he is so free with his help and advice.
--This song is written from a book called 'Six String', a story about a poor girl in US who runs away from a broken home with only a change of clothes and her battered up guitar. It's a really good read and Thomas has captured the mood of the book so well in the music which he has put to the author's lyric.
--Try also listening to Thomas' 'Hidden Inside' which is so meaningful and again shows up the lovely sounds of Open tunings.

Before this thread goes any further it is worth pointing out that "Best" in this context is obviously intended to mean a personal judgement or particular favourite (which is an interesting thing to know), and does not mean an absolute concept (which, as some have pointed out in past similar threads, is not definable).
I love this type of thread, and a song I have been very struck by this year is actually (just) from last year - lovely harmony and swapping with great voice blending
That lovely version is equalled by this one, which also demonstrates some very engaging goofs/recoveries!

I totally agree that 'best' can only be in the judgement of the person putting it forward. The reason I put it forward as 'this year' was to encourage people to share 'new' material which otherwise may pass us by, often by lesser known artists. It hopefully will allow us to try something new to play rather than just old covers (which of course I still like doing). J

What an interesting selection. The Phoebe Bridgers recording is just stunning! Thanks. Which of the Phoebe Bridgers ones especially? The Radiohead song in particular. I know its an old one but the music of the late 80's 90s just passed me by as life was flat out elsewehere so nice to hear a new take on it.

I found this album, recorded last year, called Bleckell Murry Neet. I use Amazon music Unlimited, I was very late to the streaming world, but I've found a huge amount of music there over the last six months or so, and CD quality.
The guitarist is called Ed Heslam, of whom I can find very little on the web. If any of you know him, or *are* him, if you could pass on my congratulations. This is a very finely crafted album indeed. They are all arrangements (by Ed) of Cumbrian tunes.
The standout for me is this one, which I've found on YouTube to share, which reminds me a lot of the work of John Renbourn, which can only be a good thing IMHO.
If, like me, you like a bit of hard rock in the car, Stuart Masters, once an acoustic wizard, has turned his dexterous fingers to an electric guitar, and the debut album Nine Moons has had quite a few plays in there.

I mostly listen to traditional folk music, so don't listen to many 'new' songs.
But here's a track from my favourite album of 2022, "10 English Folk Songs" by Nick Hart.

and here's a song from another of my favourite albums of 2022, by the duo of Sarah Hill (vocals) & Phil Tyler (acoustic guitar). It's a George Ellis poem set to music, and is from the album What We Thought Was a Lake was a Field of Flax. philtylersarahhill.bandcamp.com/track/golden-lads
