With all the talk about new guitars and folks selling the odd instrument, I wonder if you have "one that got away"? An instrument that you sold, but now rather wish you'd kept.
For me it's a copy of a Larson Prairie State, made by John Greven in the US. A monster of a guitar, with a very wide body that wasn't very deep, and made of the most wonderfully figured Macassar ebony. When in dire need of funds I sold it to a dealer in Japan, and the other day came across some pictures of this actual instrument. Good looking, isn't it? Mind you, I'd like to have a word with whoever installed that socket by the strap button - it definitely wasn't me!

I've sold some instruments that I would like to have kept but I sold them because they weren't getting played much and I didn't have the space to keep them comfortably (plus the money is always useful). Tbh I play one guitar most of the time and while I like my others I sometimes think I wouldn't miss them at all if they went. So I suppose the answer is no.

The wife gave me this rule, with reference to guitars, one new in one old out, I have seven guitars, but get that feeling every now and again to have a new guitar. Unfortunately every time I get a new guitar, I regret losing one but you can't keep them all.

For me it's my beautiful Brook acoustic bass. Rarely does a day go by when I don't miss it.

This was a lovely, simply-appointed small guitar built by Bruce Sexauer that had such a great big beautiful tone. It also had a wedge body which made it easy on the picking arm. I never quite got used to the slightly angled frets but believe that this was due to my lack of skill rather than the design... I should have stuck with it and adapted. Apart from that, the playability was great and the neck very comfortable. By gosh it sounded good and I do regret letting it go (especially as his prices went up considerably after that time)....
PS, that's not me in the picture... that's someone else who evidently enjoyed the guitar very much

Yeh I made quite a few videos with it. When I get to work this morning I'll try and post a playlist OK, here is a playlist of some of my mostly solo acoustic bass recordings: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRpEDiEphFpc3xtjhPjCwqKEzuPsiS7FO

Very nice! It fits very nicely with my love of lute music, especially the bigger lutes with many bass strings.
I might try some of this on my acoustic bass, but I'm afraid my fretless skills aren't accurate enough for it to sound good.

Mostly my ones that got away were instruments that I either didn't or couldn't afford to buy at the time I found them. But just recently I've been thinking about a Moon 10-string bouzouki that I had for a couple of years in the mid-2000s. At the time I was really looking for something more suited to rhythm playing, which the Moon very much wasn't, and I ended up selling it to raise money for my Oddy cello-mandolin. I have no regrets about buying the Oddy, but occasionally I do miss the sweetness and delicacy of the Moon. It would never have worked in a loud ceilidh band, which I was playing in at the time, but it was a really nice instrument to relax with.

There is no such thing as a “frivolous” musical purchase! If this terrible notion got established we should all be in trouble.
