I know putting flatwound strings on resonators is something people do, but I'm curious as to whether anyone uses them on a flat top acoustic? Are acoustic flatwound strings even a thing?

Michael Watts did a video about this recently: D'Addario also make "flat top" strings, which are effectively semi-flatwound, may be worth a look.

Interesting! I have flatwounds on my lap steel, and they are sooooo smooth. Not sure I'd try them on the National, though, because the rough sliding noise is part of the charm (IMHO, YMMV)

I don't use flatwound on anything. Certainly not on flat tops! i have a Dobro square neck Beard cone (like my mandolin, hardly used nowadays).
I'm flirting with Nickel wound - have gone to Ni and my National Estralita which is wearing Darco 910 (plain G) which I won't use again. I've fount that the best sound on this is used PB strings taken off a dreadnought after about three months. I have a theory that on a reso you don't really hear the strings but the cone, but older strings are a little smother sounding. (I put new unwounds on).

I think Micheal Watts nailed it with his video. Flatwounds are great for Jazz/Bossa. I use Thomastik JS strings on one of my flat tops for exactly that. If you look for pearly trebles flatwounds are maybe not the best option.

I use them on my Tele (Daddario ECG23's). They produce a more mellow sound, but as said above, you do loose some trebles. On balance I prefer them. They are expensive but seem to last longer.
I doubt I will be putting any on my acoustics.
