I listened to The Acoustic Guitar Podcast featuring Bruce on my way to work this morning: acousticguitar.com/bruce-cockburn-the-acoustic-guitar-podcast/Whilst I know the name, I have never really listened to any of his music. He appears to be a very good guitarist. He's playing in "E-GAD" these days - EADGAD. Any fans here? Recommendations for stuff I should listen to? Favourite albums or tracks? TIA, Peter

Been a huge Bruce Cockburn fan since my graduate school days. I especially like the earlier stuff. "Dancing in the Dragon's Jaw" is one of my favorite albums of all time. The single "Wondering Where the Lions Are" from that album still turns me inside out. And, yes, he is a great guitarist, for which he never gets enough credit. Check out "Speechless", an album of solo acoustic guitar. The man can play the instrument. He's also a very deep guy, and I think you have to spend a bit of time with the lyrics to get the full impact. Hope this helps.

I am at this very moment ripping my CD of "Bruce Cockburn Live" so I can listen on my phone. He's great, and his songs show a real passion. "If I had a Rocket Launcher" is one I remember from way back.

Andy P is a big fan - can you help at all Andy? Keith The sound of squealing brakes announces my late arrival at this thread! Yes, I've been a huge BC fan since the mid 70's when I first heard Dancing in the Dragon's Jaws (already mentioned above). It was given to me by a friend who had been living in Toronto, BC's home city. It's one of those rare albums where every song is right up there. Apart from anything else, rhythmically it's a delight. He's a phenomenal guitarist and wonderful songwriter, a poet in fact. Many of his songs are pretty cryptic - he's a very spiritual man. He's also a great humanitarian and has travelled widely, observing, commenting and composing about human rights abuses, civil wars, far right administrations, etc. Breakfast in Los Angeles, Dinner in Timbuktu is probably my favourite album. The Charity of Night is also a magnificent piece of work, full of dark imagery and haunting tunes, but perhaps not one to listen to if you need cheering up! If you like his music, I can heartily recommend his autobiography Rumours of Glory.Funnily enough I only finally got to see him three years ago, in Edinburgh. What a special night that was. I'm always surprised that he's not better known in this country - he's a national treasure in Canada. Here's a wee taster, showcasing his powerful song-writing, that voice and his superb guitar-playing. By the way, he plays Manzer guitars. And here's Pacing the Cage, one of my absolute BC faves.

Thank you! More to explore, which I will do. If you haven’t listened to the podcast I referenced, I expect you would enjoy it.

I’ve just seen him live a few days ago, and his music and playing is absolutely sensational, and as others have said, vastly underrated. He has a new album out that is extremely good, O Sun, O Moon

I'd never really heard much of him until a few weeks ago when I caught his set at Greenbelt. I was walking past the main stage where he was playing on my way to hear someone else, and I ended up standing there for the rest of his set. He did say that he's had to adapt his playing in recent years because of arthritis - you would never have known it from listening to him, but he said that he's rearranged some of his earlier songs to make them more playable for him now. All I can say is that I wish I could play like that without arthritis.
