RIP Roger Whittaker. He, Val Doonican and a small group of others introduced me to the acoustic guitar (and artists like the great Janis Ian) via Saturday night family TV... Great songs too!

Reading his obit in The Times this morning, I found a more fascinating man than I expected. He recorded 25 German albums and in 1985 was the biggest-selling act who sang in the German language. He was a knowledgeable connoisseur of antiques with a collection ranging from 18th-century French commodes to ormolu-decorated Regency furniture. A sale of items from his collection at Sotheby’s in 1999 raised £1 million and when he retired to the south of France in 2012, a second auction in 650 lots included such unusual items as an anatomical collection of insects preserved in amber, which he studied and photographed through a microscope, and a death mask of the Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh. He made the UK Top 20 in 1969 with Durham Town (The Leavin’), a wistful ballad he had written in his dressing room while waiting to appear on a television show with Michael Aspel. It was, he said, “the first truly decent song I had written” and nobody seemed to mind too much that he downgraded Durham from a city and erroneously located it on “the banks of the River Tyne” rather than the Wear.

RIP! I only know him for that song about Durham. Back when I was a kid I didn't know where Durham was! Now I live a bus ride from the city
