My main instrument is: probably needing new strings

The lad did as much as anyone to bring Irish music into the wider public arena and 'Fairytale of New York' is, and always will be, one of my top 3 Christmas songs.
To be honest, I'm quite surprised he made it to 65 but a sad day, nonetheless.

Just heard this in the news. Kirsty and Shane no longer here. Yes I'm surprised as well Leo.

What a loss.
Yes he did seem to dodge a healthy lifestyle but his contribution to music was all the richer for it. I have just finished a tongue in cheek 'fun' version of Fairytale of New York for the Duck but think I'll keep that on hold for the time being.
Rest well Shane.

RIP Shane.
I'll re-watch the documentary about the creation of Fairytale with sadness this Christmas.

Personally, I think MacGowan would be fully behind a tongue in cheek/irreverent version - it'd be a fitting tribute. No need to hold back, I wouldn't have thought

Never really liked the Pogues, but I always respected him/them for staying pretty traditional in their music. I think his appeal was partly to do with his lifestyle choice, persona, and appearance, as much as it was his music. But well respected by many, RIP Shane.

You learn something everyday, according to the news bulletin Shane was actually born in Tunbridge Wells!
I've always loved this video from the Late, Late Show in 1987, The Dubliners and The Pogues, 'Irish Rover'. Just like the best pub jam session imaginable.
My guess is that it wasn't tea in Shane's plastic cup.

To be honest, I'm quite surprised he made it to 65 but a sad day, nonetheless. There's an article in The Guardian today where readers respond to the question "What is the most unlikely event ever to have taken place?".
Apparently when they first asked in the 1970s the most popular answer was Keith Richards' thirty-fifth birthday.
Could have said the same thing about Shane.
Think I'll have a whiskey tonight.

By ‘eck this is poignant and emotional and brilliant.
MacGowan’s family recreating the ‘waltz’ from the video is a real ‘lump in the throat’ moment for me.

I never realised he was born in England! And the full name of his band the Pogues means Kiss My Arse!

I never realised he was born in England! Shane never hid his affinity for London - having been born in Kent and lived in London during some of his formative years - in songs like Transmetropolitan, London Girl, Rainy Night in Soho and Misty Morning, Albert Bridge. Like any good songwriter you write about what you know and being London Irish that's exactly what Shane did. Shane's sister Siobhan gave the most beautiful eulogy to her brother recalling their close bonds and experiences growing up together in London, and their visits to family in County Tipperary filled with music, songs and storytelling. If you missed watching the whole service I hope that Siobhan's eulogy will appear online as it is the most beautiful and loving tribute that, personally speaking, had this old fart lump-in-throat and close to tears. Slainte Shane for all the songs you gave to the world!
