For the last couple of months the fingers in my left hand have begun to tremble when I play guitar. Strangely enough it only happens when I play and I'm assuming that it's because of the instability of playing at the first couple of frets because it seems to get better as I go up the neck. It's not extreme but irritating as Hell. After hearing that the consumtion of alchohol can relieve it I did some research and found this video. What I discovered is that after about four beers by golly it actually works. Fortunately unlike this guy I don't have to get quite that butt faced for it to help and since I spent 50+ years playing in bars doing exactly that it seems that I'm still good to go. At the age of 75 I do fear that it will get worse as time goes by but I'm hoping that all that will mean is that I'll need to buy more beer.

Hi. It sounds like you have benign essential tremor. In reality we all have it but our cerebellum in the old brain evens out the small shakes and you don’t notice. But if anyone holds out their hand you will see small movements as our muscles are always fighting against gravity. A steady hand seem at slow motion is not as steady as you think. In hospital I diagnose this quite frequently. Often mistaken for Parkinson’s but typically that tremor occurs at rest, whereas BET is more pronounced when you try and do something. Some patients can’t hold a cup of tea without spilling it all over them. Bill Werbenik the Canadian snooker player from the 70s and 80s had this. Partly why he was so overweight was the beer he drank when he played to stop the shakes. It tends to get worse/present itself as you get older.

^^^Thanks for your very informed input. Yes, at first I did fear it was Parkinsons because my Grandfather had that towards the end of his life. I'm grateful to hear that it's not that and of course the word benign pleases me as well. It's 9 A.M. here which is my usuall practice time and I'm on my first beer accepting the words of Jimmy Buffet when he sang "It's 5 oclock somewhere".
