So I've been into blues music a while now and I get the whole 12 bar blues, I IV V progression thing (even though that's not the only progression type), and was playing around with minor chords, starting on Am (I) then going to Dm (the IV), then Em (V), which is all well and good, but I find after the first two chords, the Em sounds a bit lacking something. Am to Dm sounds great, but Em kinda lets the side down I'm wondering what other chord would sound better after those two, so breaking out of the I IV V pattern... Or I suppose I could try starting on Dm, but then Gm is a barre, and one I really struggle with...I just can't seem to get a firm barre with no buzzing...

Try E7 instead of Em.

As delb0y says, E7 will work well. Also, try squeezing in an F just before the E7. Like this guy does

Funny you should say that because I was in fact playing A7 when I thought I was playing Am! Brainfart

A thing I like to do is lift a finger off briefly then put it down again, creates a nice ambience

If the barre gives you grief, try just holding down the 6th string with your 1st finger and only playing the bottom four strings - like this 1 3 3 2 x x
or, if you can wrap your thumb around to hold the 6th string, you can play the bottom 5 strings 1 0 3 2 1 x

Let's just forget the F for now eh ...so change key - try Em, Am and B7. Then for the C7 use the B7 shape one fret up - nice bluesy clash of notes - before mooving swiftly back to B7. Keith
