I stopped wanting to buy guitars in 1994 when I started building them, and have never bought another one since. Mind you I did buy 120 Hiscox guitar cases.

I've been downsizing (from a peak of about 15 acoustics a decade or so ago) but have reached the point where 4 out of my 5 remaining instruments have been declared Family Heirlooms by my wife and offspring, so I'm a bit stuck. I'd love to sell a couple that I really don't play and put the money towards something that I'd like to try, but... My favourite and the only one that I regularly play now is the only one they aren't worried about!

If you ever find you have too many Hiscox cases and want to offload one or two, give a shout... (looking for a reasonably priced used classical case, which I am told will fit a National Triolian)

I quite fancy a resonator myself. There's one on Gear4Music for about £180

Not sure how good a resonator you'd get for that. I must confess I don't play mine as much as I should. I think I'll try and put that right very soon!

I'm currently: 4 acoustics, 1 electric, 1 kids classical guitar that I use as a travel guitar So not ridiculous. But then we get onto other instruments... 2 banjos, 2 mandolins, 1 ukulele, 1 Seagull M4 (stick dulcimer thing), 1 violin, 1 viola, 1 electric bass, 1 big synthesizer, several little box synthesizers (Korg Volcas, Pocket Operators), small tongue drum, miscellaneous little percussion instruments... I think that's the sum total.
Of all those, there's not many I could cut down on. Meaning to get rid of one of my guitars - a Harley Benton mahogany parlour - which is a perfectly good cheapo guitar but totally surplus to requirements. One of my banjos is a vintage SS Stewart nylon string and I really ought to sell it cos I never play it. Should probably ditch my bass too - haven't played it since I stopped doing rock music.

I have three lovely acoustic guitars, all Fyldes. Why would I want/need another guitar ?
Then I watch a couple of youtube videos by Martin Simpson explaining about the benefits of 12 fret guitars and Silly Moustache saying he prefers 12 fretters and all of a sudden i'm looking at 12 fretters. There's no logic. There is a difference obviously because mine are all 14 fretters. But I can use a capo on them. But i'm still looking.
Cue the responses saying wanting another guitar is logical in itself, it doesn't matter what you've got already.

Fan fret? Resonator? Jumbo? Nylon string? Brazilian rosewood? The Tree? Cedar top? Harp? I mean, the possibilities are endless. Your self control so far is admirable. 😉 Peter

A 12 fret guitar usually keeps the same scale length as a 14 fret so the bridge is pushed further down the guitar body. In theory at least the bridge is closer to the centre of the lower bout and causes the top to vibrate more than a 14 fret guitar of similar scale length.
The difference in distance from guitar body to headstock can also help people with short arms or reach problems, something which a capo just can't do.

I didn't explain that bit very well did I Dave.
I should have said using a capo on the first fret of a 14 fretter makes for less of a stretch, roughly similar to a 12 fretter, the first fret being about the same width as the 13th and 14th frets combined. But doing that also shortens the scale length. So similar in one way but not identical.
I'll get there in the end.
