I've been meaning to really get to grips with lap steel for some time... I've had the Rickenbacher for ages (an impulse bid on eBay that somehow won) but only just got round to getting an amp.
Since playing blues solo isn't much fun, I'm thinking of getting something like a Digitech Trio+ to generate some backing before trying it in public. Has anyone tried one of those?

Have played a Weissenborn type instrument (Red Kite) made by davewhite, as have other members during a Road Trip around several of us. It really deserved a better player, though! I loved it as an instrument to add extra things to a mix - you're right to try to arrange some "backing" for your lap slide juliant - would love to hear what you come up with. You can read about my time with the guitar and listen to/watch some of my efforts here - acousticsoundboard.co.uk/thread/10261/kite-landed-somerset-song-addedAnd if you search the Forum for "Red Kite Road Trip" threads you'll unearth other folks' experience with the guitar too. It was a great Road Trip for Red Kite, thanks to Dave. Keith

Cool instrument. I remember reading, when a kid, that the Rickenbacker "Frying Pan", steel guitar, was the first ever electric guitar.

It's a very cool relic of the early days of electric instruments, from the days when Bakelite was the material of the future (1936!). It weighs a ton, and I'm always rather nervous carrying it around because it would probably shatter if I dropped it on a hard surface. Years ago someone put this on eBay with a stupidly low starting bid (his words when I picked it up, not mine), I bid and for some unknown reason no-one else did, so I got this for about 20% of what I've seen them go for.
I'm looking to develop some David Lindley-type playing (hah! who am I kidding?) so a volume pedal will be along at some point.

And I found out that Mr. Rickenbacher changed his name when WW2 came along to make it a bit less German-sounding.

Keith When I lost my fingers and could no longer play a standard guitar, Dave kindly built me one of his Red Kites in a guitar swap that we did, and a wonderful thing it is too. My left hand dexterity doesn't let me play it to its best, but it is great fun. I used to collect bakerlite so will have to keep my eye open for one of those. Colin

I play lapslide, though I sold my Weissenborn to fund a Gibson ES335 purchase. I. Mainly play in Open D or C. Currently using a straight acoustic with a nut riser. I used to play the Weissenborn through a fuzz pedal into an amp, it was magic.
