Hi all - taught a six year old today. Adopted some techniques used by the Suzuki technique and used the phrase: 'miss-is-sip-pi-hot-dog' as a strumming rhythm, worked really well - taught him the blues by tuning the guitar to G (D G D G B D) adding the sixth by fingering the top string 2nd fret and 7th on the 3rd fret. So, that's the first lesson.
Also played a few games with higher and lower notes, louder and quieter, happy and sad chords...
Now need some more ideas in that vein. Anybody had any experience?
Eventually we'll start the Guitarist's Way books, but for now looking forward to musical games that will be fun for him (and me).
Thanks.
Jonny

Any value in doing a 'duelling banjos' type game... See if he can set new records for number of notes/chords/whatever he gets correct in the sequence?

Pretty comprehensive already Jonny - good stuff. Can only think to try adding in some simple rhythm copying games -maybe clapping first, then progressing to either strumming a tuned chord or even a single open string in simple rhythmic patterns.

Jonny that sounds really good especially teaching the soft and loud too . A refreshing change from the usual play 4 chords and some basic songs . When can I start my first lesson ;-)

Thanks for the good advice - I'm presuming Leo's is not serious? I shall try the rhythm games next time. Any other suggestions?

I'm presuming Leo's is not serious? It was semi-serious .... getting your pupil to try and copy a sequence which you do (I think Keith said the same sort of thing but explained it better)
