Anyone here play/own guitars by US builders such as Olson, Ryan, Petros Kostal or Somogyi? And if so, played several makers and how do they compare with each other and other well known (UK) builders such as Sobell, Taran et al. I realise in some cases it may be apples and oranges, just trying to guage reactions and experiences in playing these instruments.

Yo. I've got a Goodall Mah/Adi Concert Jumbo. It's a beauty. Lovely ringing trebles. Presently in DADGAD for a wee change and capoed up is a delight. I think Goodalls have a reputation for brightness but this is the only one I've played. Haven't even seen another in a shop or seen anyone playing one in the UK. Here's the chappie; this is where I got it. (hope the link works...) acousticmusicworks.com/sold/goodall-mahogany-jumbo-soldI'd like to try some other American makers' guitars. I'm curious about the - alleged - difference between US/UK guitar sounds.

I have a Greenfield & a Ryan. I have owned an Olson, Matsuda, Charis & Hamblin. All different, all special. I have a Kostal & Fredell incoming. (The Ryan Mission GC may be moved on in the near future, let me know if you're interested). Each has its own voice like every other guitar but I don't have the ability to describe the tone of any of them. It's something that you have to experience I guess. I am always happy to let others play my guitars.
Cheers

I have been fortunate enough to play vicov's Greenfield and Ryan. Also played a couple of Kostals, and had one on loan for a while from jonnymosco. Thoroughly enjoyed each experience, each lovely in their own way, but in each case they sounded a lot better to me when being played by their owners! Keith

I have over 60 US and Canadian luthier built guitars in stock. If you take a trip to Brighton you can try them out for yourself. I have a playing room and make coffee.. I currently have a Taran and a very similar spec guitar by US builder Pat Foster for comparison, no Sobells right now. www.theacousticmusicco.co.uk

Re difference, I think each guitar builder is different regardless of geography, but I know what you mean with a style of guitar having its own qualities re type of music ideally suited.

I have a Ryan, want an Olson! Kostal and Fredell are guitars I'm interested in, I'm a fingerpicker but not a fingerstyle player. Have been in touch with both and lean towards Kostal as a person....

Keith Yeah, I know it is hard to put a comparison into words Keith, but if there was a fire and you can only grab one guitar..... Re being behind or in front of the guitar, isn't it weird how much of a difference there is. Def worthwhile taking a playing friend with you when trying out a potential purchase.

MW I will indeed look you up when in London although I will give you a shout first. I am a great admirer of your abilities and appreciate the videos that you demonstrate all these wonderful guitars on. I seem to remember that you had an Olson, sold it and managed to regain it and then sold it again because of the acquisition of your Kostal. Is that correct and any comment?.

Thanks for your kind words redpick! I've never owned an Olson, I'd like to at some point certainly. You might be thinking of a Bashkin guitar that I had on loan until the first Kostal arrived (also on loan until my own guitar was completed!)... I have played my Kostal Mod D since the summer of 2011 and this alongside a Martin D-35s from 1969 and a Gretsch White Falcon are doing the job for now!
