I came across this one one a Dulcimer forum I was perusing. Written by the famous English Hurdy Gurdy maker and player Nigel Eaton (ex Blowzabella and has played with Jimmy Page and Robert Plant)as a Schotttische and given words by Iain Frisk as a Christmas Carol - "The Halsway Carol". Here's it played by Nigel and sung by Julie Murphy as the Carol: https%3A//soundcloud.com/nigeleaton/halsway-carol-withAnd here's Nigel playing it on the Hurdy Gurdy: What a fabulous tune/Carol. Apparently there's a Dutch website collecting versions of the tune played on different instruments with some done on guitar and other instruments. Could be an interesting one for Forum members to have a go at.

That Hurdy Gurdy has a fabulous sound. I was in Hobart, Tasmania, a couple of weeks ago and there was a busker at the Salamanca markets playing one, outside. I was surprised at the volume he was putting out, and from a distance it sounded like pipes.

Great post Dave! Halsway Manor is situated about 5 miles from where I live, just over the other side of the Quantocks. Interesting place, hosting many folkie events, mostly dance/trad orientated. www.halswaymanor.org.uk/They have an amazing library with all sorts of fairly obscure music and music related books. Have played there on several occasions for various private functions - it's a lovely venue for eg a wedding reception or party. Keith

Glorious singing and playing for a crisp autumn day. The Hurdy Gurdy creates a wonderful atmosphere.

Apologies, the Hurdy Gurdy maker is Nigel's brother Chris Eaton. That Hurdy Gurdy has a fabulous sound. I was in Hobart, Tasmania, a couple of weeks ago and there was a busker at the Salamanca markets playing one, outside. I was surprised at the volume he was putting out, and from a distance it sounded like pipes. Kym Kym - maybe it was Graeme McCormack there's a photo of him playing his Hurdy Gurdy at Salamanca Markets in Hobart on his website.

Dave, it's hard to say if it was the same person. The hurdy gurdy player I saw had what we would call here an 'early settler' beard and hairstyle: think the total hair from ZZ Top all grafted onto one bloke. This tended to obscure his features.
He was a very capable player.
It was an overcast day in Hobart, about 20 degrees C with a cool breeze. The locals were thinking about taking their shirts off and putting mirrored collars under their chins and I was wishing I had put on a jumper under my leather jacket.

My pleasure Robbie. Apologies again - Chris Eaton is Nigel's dad not brother.
