I see that the great one has a new CD "Electric" released on 11th February and I'm excited. His last couple have been good but not "vintage" but I'm ever the eternal optimist - glass half full

I'm not really a fan of RT (please don't hit me!), but I'm willing to admit that I haven't listened to a broad range of his stuff - in fact I think I might only have a couple of CDs. One of these is definitely 'I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight'. Is it worth exploring anything of his in particular any further, or am I just a musical 'Philistine'?

I must be a Philistine too as RT's work has never really grabbed me either...curiously my only album of his is "Bright Lights" too. Plus one for any suggestions re "RT for newbies" albums...

I am in the same boat. I can admire what he does but it doesn't provoke much of an emotional response in me. I like a few of his songs but often more when covered by others, notably "God Loves a Drunk" sung by Norma Waterson.
Brian
PS The title "Electric" will not encourage me!

.... Brian - there are acouple of tracks using acoustic guitar, despite the album title. Flip though the link I posted and you'll find them.
Martin - I love Bright Lights album too - for further listening you might give Sunnyvista and/or Shoot out the Lights (both still with Linda) a listen, plus any of his work with Fairport, esp Liege and Lief, though you probably have that. Quirky oddments worth a spin would be Strict Tempo, a folk-rock kind of collection of instrumental tunes (mostly trad) that I'm sure you would like, and Small Town Romance, a live acoustic solo album which has some lovely moments.
I am less keen on his later mainly electric albums, though each has at least one or two gems, and i always enjoy watching his DVDs, whether electric or acoustic.
I've been having a go at some of his seriously miserable songs lately, which is, strangely uplifting in an odd sort of way!

I can't say I'm a great fan of his albums but I saw him at the Lewis guitar festival a few years ago. I only went because I had a free ticket as a sponsor, it was one of the best gigs I've ever been to. So I went to the Brighton gig last Friday. It was amazing, just three musicians, excellent bass and a phenomenal drummer, it was uplifting to see three guys 'in the groove' and really working together.

Mornin' Trevor - welcome - glad you decided to give us a go. Certainly agree about RT live performances - can be exciting, and sometimes a bit on the edge as he's prone to experimenting with oldies. (songs, not band members! ) Keith
