By the end of this week I hopefully will have sold the lowden.
So next year Im planning to buy a guitar where she'll be a keeper (hopefully)
Currently my plan Is to order a lowden f model with fan frets.
But I would like to know what else I could buy just making sure for myself its a guitar I like.
Please no big brands like martin or taylor for some reason they dont appeal to me at all.
Thanks. Chris.

Hi Chris, Well as previously mentioned elsewhere, davewhite ( De Faoite Stringed Instruments) could build you something that would be tailored to your exact requirements, even with fan frets, and it would certainly be a keeper. There are a fair few on this forum who are happy owners and players of Dave's guitars, one or two who may well be close to your location and perhaps willing to let you try these guitars out for size My other recommendation, from personal choice, would be a Taran guitar, made in Fife by Rory Dowling ( taranguitars). I and some other forum members have and play these guitars, and he may be able and willing to do a fan fret job for you too.

You won't go short of advice here but, for what it's worth, I'd strongly suggest you check out hand-made guitars. Dave White, of this manor, has made guitars for several members. I'm having two made by Rory Dowling of Taran guitars and Martin has one of Rory's also. The point about having a guitar built for you is just that - it's built for you.
Ideally you meet your maker (as it were...) a few times and he'll be able to glean exactly what you want from a guitar. It's one thing to play your guitar; quite another thing to have someone else hear you play. A luthier will be able to taylor your instrument for you. Something you just won't get from off-the-peg guitars.
A good mass-produced guitar can't compare with a hand-made model.
Have a look on Rory's website (Taran Guitars) and maybe call him. (he's in Pittenweem and maybe the closest to you...?)
All the best with your search - it's great fun.
Alasdair.

Please no big brands like martin or taylor for some reason they dont appeal to me at all. I've played 2 Lowden FF's and they sounded superb, easily the best Lowdens I've played. Couldn't get on with the extreme difference between Bass and Treble scales though. I'd recommend trying one first, a few shops seem to have them. If you're looking for a Lowden, the other NI builders might be worth checking eg Avalon and McIlroy. Brook guitars, they do a FF option with a cedar top (walnut back and sides perhaps?) might bring it into more Lowden sounding territory of sorts.

Tried to find the brook FF but cant seem to find it.
Ive played the f25/23 and really liked them but its just FF thats making me think. I will hopefully try a FF soon then make a choice. But from what ive heard it seems something down my street.
Need to make a choice soon before the missus has other plans with thd money.

Re Brook fanfrets, you can either look back through the news section on their website, (September and October 2012) or reread the review in Acoustic Magazine, which I think was about 18 months ago or so now (I think the one with the guy from feeder on the front). Hi Chris, I don't know where you are located but if you can get to Brighton I have around 80 new and used handmade guitars in stock. There are also all on my website. Free tea and coffee available and a playing room. www.theacousticmusicco.co.uk

Hi Colan,
Sorry I don't know what you mean by add a k. I tried to not make it sound like an advert, just trying to offer him some options.
... Spotted it now and added. Thanks.

It occurs to me that you might stick your name down for Rory's forthcoming road trip guitar (check out the thread). That will be happening sometime next year. You'd get a great guitar to play for a week or so at your leisure...

The thread's back on page five of 'General Acoustic Board'. It's under the heading 'Who's' up for a Taran Tour?' Basically he sends one of his guitars around forum members to get feedback and, hopefully, business. The forthcoming one will be his second, unfortunately I missed that one but I'm up for this one!
