I am going to try and make a more focused effort to develop my guitar playing as I seem to spend more time making them at the moment rather than playing them. Although I may make another mandolin as the one I have just finished is being given away and try to learn a few tunes.

I've been quite taken by the sound of vicov's soon to be completed hourglass dulcimer that davewhite has been building (he posted a soundclip a few days ago)... if one comes up cheap on eBay...

Well, I've had a 5-string banjo for a couple of months and I can play it a bit, but my aim for next year is to get a lot more proficient on it and learn to play some neat clawhammer/frailing stuff.
I also want to try to improve my rudimentary harmonica playing if time allows.

I keep a banjo under my bed in case of burglars. They don't like 'em bashing down on their heads you know - they're so heavy. That's why I don't play it. I can hardly lift it.

For me it's going to be clawhammer banjo. I've borrowed a really nice open back banjo from my good friend Martin Simpson. It's a hand built banjer by the late great Barry Murphy. I've placed an order with Jason and Pharis Romero for a Romero banjo, but that is way down the line and I hope to somewhat more proficient a player by the time it comes along. It's great fun to start completely from scratch but also a little frustrating at times too. Cheers, Ian I've been "learning" banjo for a while. I have two, a Cedar Mountain A2 and a very recently acquired Wildwood Troubadour. I can use them as accompaniment in songs but have some way to go before I would perform a solo tune on stage. Lots of good stuff on Youtube. Recently acquired two mountain dulcimers and a 1920 Mandolin. They're next.

Good to see you back amongst us, Chris I've a Cedar Mountain banjo too, and it's a very nice instrument Mountain dulcimers are certainly getting popular around here!

Don't hold your breath Leo. LOL! There are a few on eBay but they're all Ozark/Blue Moon types and, well, I've been bitten before My experience is that the Blue Moon hourglass ones improve dramatically with age. I left mine propped up behind a floorstanding speaker, and between that and an hour or so of playing a week it went from a just-about-acceptable sound to a decent hummer. Sounds more focused than my old one actually. Quite easy to fret too, even when you're doing those awkward chords that call for you to use the edge of your thumb.

A very long time ago (late 60's) I saw a guy in a pub playing what he described as a "Guinessophone". He produced a set of bottles of Guinness and took the tops off. He then drank differing amounts out of each bottle so that when struck each produced a different note. He then played them with a pair of pencils! Totally barmy, but most amusing. Much more fun setting-up for a gig than most kit. Perhaps I'll stick with the melodian as my "other" instrument as the older I get the less tolerant I am of hangovers!

No new instruments for me in 2014. I already have trouble to keep the existing ones entertained.
The whistles got some more attention than the harmonicas. The guitars suffer from boredom and the bodhràn hasn't been touched in months.
