I thought Ralph came over as really nervous - strange, I've seen him play live and he's a very natural performer; perhaps opening was daunting. I agree about the vocals, also lots of the performances lacked 'presence' and seemed quite awkward. Unlike the vids of Jansch playing live 10 years ago, always had that edge and raw appeal as a guitarist. Where was John Renbourn? Martin Simpson played a large part in the programme, but what's his history with Jansch? Glad the concert was woken up by the closet rock god who is michaelwatts!!! I enjoyed the format, guitar-spotting and the clips of the old days. Jonny

I was really looking forward to this programme, but found it a big let down. Didn't enjoy any of the covers of Bert's songs.

Just watching it now. Ralph Mctell played Anji on a gibson with a split saddle. Not seen that before. Any ideas which model?

I'm struggling to agree with any criticism. I thought almost all of it was humble and of a great standard. I agree that Ralph McTell appeared very nervous, which I found endearing rather than a negative thing.
Imagine being tasked to play Anji at a Jansch or a Davey Graham tribute in front of such a critical audience. Someone had to do it, must have been terrifying for the most seasoned pro!!!
Interesting thought that Wizz was hinting at Davey Graham as the inspiration for High Days. Jackson C Frank was my initial thought.

I think it's fair to say that Bert's music means a lot to all of us and that was palpable backstage. There was a real sense of occasion and gratitude towards Bert for the music, inspiration and in many cases friendship that he'd given those present over the years. It's fair to say that if it wasn't for Bert's music I probably wouldn't have picked up a guitar. My dad used to sing me his songs in my baby bouncer! I met Bet a couple of times and am happy to have had the chance to thank him in person. The last time I saw him play was one of the Pentangle reunion gigs and he was absolutely wonderful. As for John, he'll have his reasons. I caught up with him a couple of weeks ago after several years. I honestly didn't feel the need to press him on the subject. MW

Slight aside, but anyone want to speculate about who Wizz thought High Days was written about? I have two names in mind, but wondered if others had ideas. High Days Lyrics. I’m sorry if I failed you, for that I take the blame And I’m sorry if I snubbed you, I hang my head in shame But those people you call friends did you much more harm than good I should’ve tried much harder to reach out when i could When the children come to visit you, you break into a smile They fill your heart with sunshine, just for a little while You made a model airplane to teach them how to fly But when it crashed on the runway, you didn’t ask the pilot why I got the lady from Baltimore stuck on my mind Bringing back those high days, when we would hang around You play your guitar, but you never ever finish the song Didn’t matter than, I guess it doesn’t matter now I got the lady from Baltimore stuck on my mind Bringing back those high days, when we would hang around You play your guitar, but you never ever finish the song Didn’t matter than, and I guess it doesn’t matter now And I guess it doesn’t matter now I guess it doesn’t matter now Could it be Cliff Aungier?

It's a 1959 Gibson J45 which Ralph uses on stage now since his original J45 "Miss Gibson" (also ?1959?)went into retirement. Obviously the original bridge/saddle has had some work, but whether at Ralph's instigation or previously to him obtaining it I don't know. Very ccommon for older original Gibson bridges/saddles to be replaced/modified. Also many had the sunburst finish stripped in the early 60s causing them to resemble J50s. Keith

Thank you very much for such a detailed answer. I am a fan of mr mctell. Seen him live 3 or 4 times. You're welcome- there's a lot of love for Ralph on this Forum! I first saw him live in around 1967/8 and have been a firm fan ever since. His first two LPs, which I bought shortly after their release (and still have) were continually on my turntable and were my main fingerpicking tutors. Sadly, it's a year or three since I last saw him perform. Hopefully it won't be too much longer. Hi, new at this so not sure of etiquette. If any one is able to make me a copy of THE GENIUS OF BERT JANSCH, from BBC4 Friday 28th of March, I'd be eternally grateful. Ken.

Hi there, Ken and welcome to the forum! I might have a copy of this somewhere, and I'll have a look around later and let you know. In the meantime, why not let us know a bit about yourself and your guitar/music etc in the Introduce Yourself section?

Hi, still trying to work out how to use "introduce yourself". Brain not too good at moment, too many pain killers. Will work it out eventually. Thanks for the speedy reply. The music from that concert really helps me relax, so sad when set top box crashed. Ken. P.s. I will meet any costs, charges, expenses e.c.t.
