You hear of people having wraps and ping-pong balls glued to their nails - I've tried a lot of things which weren't long-lasting and made my nails dry out and very brittle. I have paper-thin nails and am obsessive about getting a decent tone from them...
I just happened to be walking past a nail salon with Mrs Mosco and she said we should get our nails done, well, I'm glad we can share these experiences together. So, I just explained to the 'technician' (can't bring myself to say 'beautician'!) that I'm a guitarist and she said they do loads of guitarists' nails.
Took 10 mins, acrylic powder and glue, three coats - about a millimetre thick, dried matt and not noticeable.
The surprising thing is (apart from lacking any sensitivity of touch I'm used to) that when I strike a string it is more assertive and direct and accurate, I suppose because they are solid as opposed to flexible, which I'm accustomed to. So, speed is more straightforward playing tremolos. Also, brushing a harmonic is very powerful instead of muffled - rasgueados are extremely bright and loud.
Well, I'm chuffed to bits the missus dragged me in (I hope it stops there!!!) and would advise any classical or fingerstyle players who suffer from weak nails to give it a go. However, not sure how long it will last and what they will look like (at the cuticle) when the nail's grown.

You're a brave man Jonny - let's just hope Mrs M hasn't got her eye on your "mankini line" next?

Fortunately, I have really strong nails, but I have come close to giving this a try before now.

Having tried to tell students that they must try to position their fingers to come down on the frets in as vertical position as possible, using the tips and that they'd not fret cleanly if they didn't, I was asked how Dolly Parton managed to play with her 2" fingernails. On investigation this is what I found

So presumably Johnny you're retuning all your guitars now!

What happens when they grow out, though? That's what I'd be worried about.

Just a brief update - besides the embarrassment of having to book an appointment (whilst five women just stared at me) and obviously having them done... they faired well until a few days ago, now two have split across the nail, still fine for picking, but are prone to catching on clothes. So, tomorrow I'm off to have them redone.
They lasted a month and for the £2 each finger, well worth it, so much more versatile as pickers and strummers. The edges can be buffed to a high sheen and they give a very full tone. I have kept them longer than usual, which may explain the splitting accidents, so I'll keep them shorter next time.
Cheers
Jonny

I tried Acrylic nails for a bit a few years ago, but had trouble after a few weeks when the real nail underneath began to grow and formed a ridge which the strings would actually get stuck in. Also something a bit too edgy about the tone if I remember, that was using steel strings
