On steel strings the sound can be brighter/harsher I think, when strumming with the nails.
I was told off by the technician (I think that's what they're called) for not having infills, oh well... she was a bit crazy and shouted at me quite a lot in Chinese, thinking I would understand... I did understand when she said "bigger breasts" and gesticulated, very entertaining, no idea why she was talking about that though.
Paul, I had my toes done too! You'll have to come and we'll get them done together.

James Taylor's nail lesson. This may have been posted before elsewhere but is worth having a look at again. JT is obviously fastidious about this (to great effect) so he must be worth listening to. Looks like a labour of love, but I suppose if you are a pro and these are your tools of the trade then its vital.
Haven't tried it myself as my nails are generally quite tough and the only problem I have is an occasional total split down the nail which takes ages to grow out.

I make my own when needed from 0.010 inch think acetate sheet, cut in strips, shaped to match the cuticles, rolled semi-curved around a small brass rod, glued onto the natural nails with cyanoacrylate (CA), tips clipped to shape with nail clippers, filed smooth and done. I do not do this as a routine anymore because the CA glue can be detrimental to the natural nail over a period of continued use. Having thick natural nails, I resort to the above method when one is lost to the job (mechanic) or to aggressive play. I've never had the work done by a salon but it sounds like the better way to go.
