I want to modify my 12 string to use a tail piece for the octave strings both to put less tension on the guitar top and also for looks, but the only problem is the colour of it. The tuners on the guitar are gold, but the only short trapeze tailpieces that I can find are Chrome and black, do you think chrome would look out of place with a guitar with gold tuners, or would black be the way to go?, in your opinion
Thanks

Why would you want to put less tension on the top? If you're talking about your PB12er you need have no worries - it was designed from the ground up as a 12er with a pin bridge.
Actually, Paul did, I believe, consider the option of some of the strings having a tailpiece and some stopping at the bridge, as was the case on some old 12ers, but discounted it as being a more expensive and trickier to set up option.

Keith It was mostly the fact that I love the look of parlors with a tailpiece such as the old Stella 12ers which I am a big fan of so I was considering it since it was only a £10 or so modification then it may have been worth a shot and if it doesn't work out well, then I will only be £10 down and have 3 small holes to fill. Also, I tune my 12 strings down, any where from 1 to 3 whole steps down but I also like medium gauge strings which could put alot of tension on the guitar but gives that thumping Blind Willie Mctell/Leadbelly sound, but the tailpiece would have alot to do with the looks.

The tension thing is a bit of a red herring - tuned down to C ish with 13s you'd probably not be putting any mnore tension on than standard with 11s.
I'd settle for the sound you want rather than be too fussed about looks! But, as you say, it could well be a cheap experiment.
3 whole steps - do you mean top E down to B?
I find my PB 12er to give a grunty rumbly old-time sound at C# (ie 3 frets down) with 12-53 strings.

It's actually at A# at the minute, I don't have the action too low so it sounds great!

Does any one by any chance know the size of the end block in the PB 12er, just so I know if I will have to modify the tailpiece so the screws don't miss the end block and go straight through the side of the guitar.

A# - immense! You should have no probs with pretty hefty strings if you're tuning down that far!
Suggest you loosen the strings and stick your hand in there!
