and if so, what did you think?
I was in Frailer`s last Saturday, and got to try their almost new 2013 Gibson J35, and was quite impressed. It certainly seemed to have an edge over most of the other slope`s they had. I see now though, that there is a newer cheaper J15 model available too, which I am also interested in.
Sitka top, solid walnut B&S, two piece maple neck, with a walnut stringer, walnut bridge and fretboard. it also shares the same bracing pattern as the J45.
Opinions appreciated.
Steve.

Not heard of this one, so just had a look online. What a lovely looking Gibson! Doesn't look like they are in this country yet though. I wonder if Gibson having a lot of their wood conviscated a little while ago has forced them into looking at alternative woods, and if so, what a blessing in disguise. A Gibson with beautiful looking tone woods for about £1000? Yum!

I've also tried the J35, which is a great guitar. The online videos of the J15 to my ears have the edge on the J35. Aside from the Walnut b/s, the 3 piece multi piece neck is a great feature. Problem with Gibson guitars are consistency, they are supposed to make some great guitars but some absolute stinkers at the same time. So if you're tempted to get a J-15, try to find a shop where they have several guitars in.

Thanks for the replies guys.
Dawson`s in Manchester have one. My son is studying Violin at the RNCM so I`ll take him in on Saturday and give it a try then,
As for Gibson`s confiscated wood robbiej, I thought that was from Nashville (Electric factory). I was unaware of Bozeman being raided too.

Steve I'm not sure of the ins and outs of the wood confiscation. Wouldn't Gibson want to consolidate its wood reserves across all its divisions? That video clip sounds very good doesn't it? I'd love to hear it in action. The reviewer says in has plenty of mids, and I can well believe that. The microphone position looks like its at the 12 fret, which usually produces a fairly bright sound, yet there is no lacking in mids on the recording. I played a J35 (or was it the American eagle model? We tried so many I've forgotten) with punt when he was guitar shopping recently, and I have to say I really liked it. I certainly didn't think the Gibsons I've tried suffered from the finish issues that many people complain about (maybe an urban myth now?) Robbie

I haven't played either, but would love to. There was some speculation that Walnut would not make a long-lasting fretboard.

It was the American eagle we tried Robbie and it was rather good, though in my recent experience I still think Gibsons suffer from very variable quality and generally low standard finishing compared with ta?lor and martin. The quality of finish and overall feel on my d18 is streaks ahead of your average j45. I'd still be tempted with a j 15 or American eagle if I found a good one though, your talking £1000-£1300 for something with much more character than a 314 Taylor even of it does lack the overall quality factor.

A good Gibson is a wonderful thing, but a bad one ...

I to have been considering one of these and would be interested in any comments especially regarding the neck profile. I haven't got very big hands and have heard that gibson necks can be quite chunky.

I was considering starting a NGD thread, but thought I'd revive this old one... I've been on the lookout for a J45 for a while, and tried some really mediocre Gibson guitars, some halfway decent copies and lookalikes, amongst which the Sigma SG45 was probably the best. However, I was back in Sheffield last weekend for their awesome sessions Festival and met up with an old pal who'd bought a 2016 J15 - I was intrigued by the wood combination - I really like walnut as a tonewood but didn't love it with the redwood top on my old fylde, however my mate's sitka and walnut dread was a revelation. The gibson thunk, with a really rich bass, good separation, nice build quality and pretty decent looks.
When I started looking, Dawsons had one for £1399 and this also was a nice looking and playing guitar, but seemed pricey. Just picked one up second hand from a shop I know well for nearly half that, so trusted the post and buying a guitar unseen - it just arrived - absolutely over the moon with it. Great sounding, pretty good looking, nice neck, feels lovely and a guitar I know I can fly with without loads of certification issues. will suit all my Nashville pretensions and some standard tuning for once!
A really good contrast to the big Lowden and the little Washburn.
(It now means the £10 antoria will go on to be set up for lap steel playing when I finish the rebinding!)

Nice one, Gav. I've recently acquired a sitka and walnut guitar that blows me away too, so I agree with your choice! Why not stick some piccies up of your new baby?

I've got a J15. I think lots of people on here tried it at HB7 when it belonged to tonywoods. I really like it, but it really doesn't compare with a good J45. Well worth the cash though. Especially when they come up second hand!

They are good guitars as is the J30. They are new designs rather than retro guitars. Also worth checking out the new Guilds which are just as good.
